Ive been trying to figure out, just how close to scale I can make an aircraft carrier similar to ILUVCOVERGIRL' s custom USS FLAGG---which is frikkin awesome by the way. Ive downloaded a few topical views of the flight deck of a modern day carrier. It has 3 elevators on the starboard side and one on the left near the rear. Im going by the premise that the average jet is 2 foot long. Each elevator can accomadate one aircraft. With this in mind, Im going on the top deck has to be roughly 30 foot long and 7 foot across at its widest point. If anyone has done the math, can you let me know, I dont think I can make it much bigger than this but I have alot of room---enough to accomadate 30 foot by 7 foot, but probably not much more in width, length I can push a bit more. So any of you Carrier fans or vets that have been on carriers, any help would be appreciated. Last I recall, someone had said 63 foot long. Ive always been impressed with the scale of models, at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, after seeing the biggest model I have ever seen of a carrier, I just want to try and capture that.
If you havent seen ILUVCOVERGIRL's amazing CUSTOM USS FLAGG, treat yourself to checking it out and his extra pics in his profile album. Its this carrier that has inspired me to make the version I have so longed for. Im still mapping out how big she will be, Im at 22 foot right now but I have 16 XP-14s on deck, 2 F-18s and one NAVY colored Blackhawk. http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...t-carrier.html |

You should be able to find real life measurements on the web somewhere, and be able to scale that down relatively easily.

Take the actual measurements and the scale is 1/18th. For example..The flight deck is 1,092 feet long and 257 feet wide; it covers a total area of 4.5 acres. Height is 244 ft.
So, 60.7 feet long and 14.28 feet wide. 13.56 feet tall. That's Nimitz Class. They way they derive 1/18th and 3.75 inch scale is a bit different than that and should probably be a bit smaller than the dimensions I gave, but not much more...maybe 8-10% smaller at most. Its going to be a daunting task if your going to go to scale. The smallest Aircraft carrier currently used by a world navy, Italy's Giuseppe Garibaldi, is around 592 feet in length and 98 feet wide. You'd need it to be 32 feet long to be 1:18 scale.
It would probably be easier to go with a much more manageable 1:32 scale for the deck since, most of the Joe planes are around that scale as well, and stick with 1:18 for the areas people will occupy. At 1:32 scale the smallest Aircraft carrier in the world would be about 18 feet long. You could make the deck Nimitz shaped and it would be 8 feet wide at its widest point 3 feet at its narrowest. Basically start with this shape File:Giuseppe Garibaldi, C551.svg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and add the angled runway to it to get a pretty good scaled Flag. Thanks Sisco, Nickvree and Pig Iron Grenadier. I would love to see it 60 foot long and 14 foot wide, but only in a high school gym:-)
I appreciate the links they are very helpful. I think Im gonna stick to 30 foot by 7 foot(Im at 22 foot now-still missing some length) Ill put pix up in a few hours to show you where Im at. I know it will work. ILUVCOVERGIRL has been extremely helpful and frankly, I have alot of planes to put on display. Im still working out dimensions but I have a few good ideas on how it will go. |

A "Navy colored" Black Hawk is called a Sea Hawk.
The Air Force calls them Pave Hawks. They're all H-60's.

I did this on Hiss Tank before. Anyway, here is the the answers:
The true scale of the ARAH U.S.S. Flagg is 1:135 scale. Those little 1:144 planes at Wal-Mart from New Millinium Toys/21st Century Toys would still be too big. That means the Figures would be 4.44 centimenters. For it to be the 25th scale (1:18 4-inch.), the U.S.S. Flagg (Kitty Hawk Class) would need to be: Length: 55 ft waterline 58.44 ft overall -------------------------- Width: 13.949 ft -------------------------- Height: 1.972 ft -------------------------- Last edited by Starfighter; 01-29-2009 at 11:18 AM.. |
