kylethoreau's thread about "first Joe you bought yourself" got me thinking. For the oldsters, why not list the first Joe you bought or received in every year (or "wave" for purists)?
Walking into a store and seeing full pegs of NEW Joes was usually an annual orgasmic experience for me. I remember being filled with a sense of awe, looking at all the new figures and deciding which to buy. Feel free to throw in any fun stories or other details. 1982: -Short-Fuse and Breaker. Ma bought 'em for me at a Woolco. I got Short-Fuse because of his "cool" visor and Breaker for his headset (plus, with the beard he reminded me of the "orginial" GI Joe from the 70's). 1983 -Doc and Gung-Ho at a mall toy store. Doc because of all the stuff he came with! Ma recommended Gung-Ho because he was "pretty and had nice colors". 1984 -Roadblock and Firefly At the goofy LaBelle's catalog showroom in mid-March. Both remained two of my favorite figures for years. 1985 Cobra Eel and Footloose Arrived a bit early, in February instead of March. I loved the Eel, but was a bit ambivalent about Footloose. After all, didn't I already HAVE an "Infantry Trooper"? First time I started to feel old, as Hasbro began to clean away some of their dead weight. 1986 Dial-Tone, Leatherneck, Zandar, Mainframe I had saved my allowance for weeks, knowing that I'd find new Joes in March. Completely indulged myself when I found some the new stuff in an "Osco" drug store. Also bought the LCV at the same time. 1987 Outback and Tunnel Rat Early January at a "Children's Palace". I had forgotten about that store. It became my go-to place for Joes for the next few years. 1988 Repeater Just a few days after Xmas 1987 at an Osco drug store. I got home and REALLY freaked out when I saw the new Storm Shadow listed on the cardback! 1989 TARGAT at a... Target store! Heh. During the after-Xmas sales in late 1988. 1990 Pathfinder, Bullhorn, Topside, Rock-Viper, Freefall and (ha!) Capt. Grid-Iron At a Target store in February. I got into selling comics and sportscards late in 1989, so I had a boatload of cash that year. 1991 Crimson Guard Immortal At a Walgreens in the mall. A few weeks before Xmas 1990. This was the last year of collecting for me. I remember not feeling any kind of excitement over finding a new figure --- a sign it had finally passed me by. I got some gimmicky "Sonic Fighters" along with the new Snake-Eyes and Mercer for Xmas 1991. Those were the last Joes I got until the relaunch in 1997.

I only remember the first Joes and a few Christmas presents. The rest is a blur.

Great memory! The good news is my parents usually video taped each Christmas we opened up presents so I can find out what I got by just watching it. Unfortunately my mother gave everything away, so it wasn't until recently that I was able to find all the stuff again.

1982 - Breaker - Walgreens
I wanted to get into JOE so bad as a kid but my parents kept saying that they didn't want me to start another collection since I had arleady large Star Wars and Masters of the Universe collections...well, my great aunt delivered when I went with her to Walgreens...I remember I had to do a lot of fast talking in order to get him...and when I did, it opened up a whole new world of action because of his posability...his realistic face. I studied that figure so much so that my family finally relented and accepted that I could collect Joes. I still have him today |

Priceless. "Ma" wasn't a man dressed like an indian, policeman, or construction worker, was she?

A memory appropriate to the season: the first time I really played with Joes, the reason Joes surpassed Star Wars figures on my x-mas list:
SNOW JOB! It was summer 1983, I'm pretty sure, and I was visiting my friends Tommy and his brother and cousin, and he had Snow Job and the Polar Battle Bear. I played with their SJ and skimobile every chance I got! Always a chase off the snow cliff (of the couch!) with Snow Job saving the day. To this day it's my fondest Joe memory. I actually got Gung-Ho before Snow Job back then (Child World, I'm guessing), and Torpedo (maybe Sears?), who I also loved, and possibly a vamp. Then the big one: for my birthday or Christmas of 1984 Tommy envied me for getting the Headquarters (Bradlees or Caldors, I think)! In 1985 I _almost_ got a HISS when they went on sale, but I moved and didn't see Joes again for a while. But the first Joe I played with was probably 1982, and something of a story in itself: a scuffed green soldier (Grunt, I later learned). I'd found him in the schoolyard, in the mud, but he wasn't mine for long: he didn't like my Death Star base's elevator (where the stormtroopers imprisoned him) or the Death Star's orange trash compactor, and he fled (though my mother insisted that I return him to the school lost & found, I think). Then the glorious summer of 2008: it's no accident that SJ was the first I hunted when I got back into it. And I got lucky---he was re-released, and he was at the second or third store I looked. I cheered (YESSS!!) and I bought him. But as cool as the new removable goggles and other features are, I was kinda disappointed when I eagerly ripped open the package and confirmed that he was in any way different from the original. But he's still one of my favorites. I'm working on making skis for when other team members are needed to battle Cobra in the arctic (still a piece of furniture, but now my bed).....

Your memory is far superior to mine...
I remember the first two (purchased at Sears in 1982 by my Grandmother) were Stalker & Snake Eyes. I remember receiving the Nightraven and Mutt w/ Junkyard on my 10th birthday (1985... the same year someone also decided to purchase me the cassette for Michael Jackson's Bad, which helped drive me away from mainstream pop music) and a Terrordrome on Christmas of the same year (or that could have been 1986... can't remember). 1985 was a very influential year for me... |

I remember 1982, my first Joe was Stalker , and later I got the cobra trooper, officer and a Cobra Commander. Stalker recieved reinforcements later on but my Cobra army was always more than my Joes could handle!
