Even Hasbro isn't THAT cheap. They aren't Mattel, darnit!

And I am fine with the Snake Eyes and EEL sharing bodies.

I've always been more of a fan of the commando look to Snake Eyes, but this is easily the best representation of his v.2 look. Using that visored head on the POC figure just didn't look right to me. He needs the whole superhero suit. My only hope is that the actual figure is darker than the pictures show. Snake Eyes should always be jet black, with his holsters and gear being lighter.

Seriously though, I don't mind Hasbro cutting back a little on the accessories, but it really bugged me that Roadblock only came with that stupid missile launcher.. Thankfully that pendulum looks to be swinging the other way. Knife, Pistol, Uzi, Sword and Timber. That's a good assortment of gear. As to the seams in his bodysuit, that doesn't bother me so much.I think it's less of Snake Eyes being a repaint and more SE, Torpedo, and the Eel being developed together to maximize resources. I think that's understandable, but I can see how some would find it irritating. Forgive me a very controversial opinion, but I never really had any attachment to the '85 figure anyway. While I like the design, I don't really care for the execution. the figure always looked really doughy to me. '89 Snake Eyes is my favorite of the original line. I've yet to see a version of the '85 SE that lived up to the design's potential in my eyes. Rescue mission is the closest I've found (and it's even better with a POC visor head.) but it's not the same. I have high hopes for this new version.

But I think the biggest plus on that figure was that the visor design was so interesting, so unique, that it has stuck so much more than simple goggles ever could. It'd be like Optimus Prime without a faceplate.

Yes, indeed! The visor definitely had staying power, It's very telling that almost every adaptation of GI Joe has went with the visor rather than goggles, the only exception I can think of being Resolute. I never even Saw an '85 SE in person until I was a grown man. I had the '83 swivel arm, and made due. I never had a visored SE until the new sculpt era. that first o-ring version from JvC was my go-to se for the longest time. All of my affection for the visor comes from the Larry Hama comic and Sunbow.

Surely I'm not the only one that thinks Hasbro got confused and that "Eel" really was meant to be a new Torpedo?
But anyway, I do find this new "Ultimate" Snake-Eyes kind of a "snake eating its' own tail" scenario. Poc Wave 3 gave us an "ultimate" Snake-Eyes, which seemed to get a counterpart with the 30th/"Renegades" Storm Shadow, which is now getting a counterpart with this particular figure.... |
