I'm not sure if this is already old news for you guys, but Mattel was able to hit the minimum preorder quota for the Castle Graysull playset.
Castle Grayskull As we speak, it's now in production. Seriously, what magic does Mattel have to come up with this product? How do they come up with a PR that enticed their consumers to support this product? What kind of support do they have from their consumers? I don't get it. We got conventions, the movies (RoC and the upcoming Retaliation) and cartoons (Sunbow, Resolute, Renegades) for PR purposes so I know Hasbro/GIJoe is not short with publicity nor consumer awareness. Tankers, I'm not here to bitch nor bash about Hasbro. But why can't Hasbro come up with something like this? Ok, for the sake of discussion, can Hasbro come up with this similar method to produce a big playset? Please pardon my ignorance, I'd greatly appreciate if anyone could shed some light on this. I'm not really complaining no comparing because each have their own differences in their own special ways, but I kinda can't help but think "why can't Hasbro do this?". *wears flame-proof gear*

Matty has almost as many problems as the club in doing things right, but yeah that playset is badass.

Here is your not so simple answer. Mattel has a brand manager who is also a fan.
Scott, also know as Toy Guru, is a fan. He is making the collection he wants and feels the other fans want. Hasbro has no such person. Their marketing and brand manager for GI Joe is just a person who needed a job (most likely). I collect the Masters of the Universe Classic (MOTUC) line. I see all the fan complaints, read all the griping, and hear all the fan problems but the MOTUC line still is far better than any retro line done to date. That is why it survives. We need a person at Hasbro who is as dedicated as Scott from Mattel. If we had that, then we might see some great things with GI Joe as well. Hasbro would need a Brand manager who is a fan and wants to fight for the survival of GI Joe. They would also need the desire to want to create a fan requested line. Right now they just do not have that.

I don't know how large Mattel is compared to Hasbro, but I think Hasbro is just too large to care about a small detail like putting a fan in charge of a small brand like GI Joe.

If i am not mistaken, Matty collector is part of Mattel whereas Fun publications/ Joe collector club is a third party & therefore a middleman. The Joe collector club seems to be in a weird purgatory with it's 3 3/4" offerings because of this. They don't get access to Hasbro's economy of scale & don't get to ( or perhaps don't think to) ride whatever marketing push Hasbro has going on.
They don't work together on Joe products & it shows. |

What's been said above.
MotUC is a line made by and for fans. Despite Toy Guru being somehwat of an a-hole, he actually cares about the line. This can't been said about ol' Joes. Just look "how well" has Retaliation been managed, with toys that fans dislike, movie delay, blah blah. MotUC is aimed for fans, it has lees amount of toys. Joes are for retail, wider public. Do you know how much the Castle is cost for us? (Argentina). Roughly 1000 bucks. Yep, with shipping, custom taxes etc. Yet, fans and collectors still ordered (and i bet that more than half the Castle preorders are from foreigners). But make the same for a Flagg or Terrordrome (preordering) and it'll fail. Because Gi Joe is too specific, is "a Real American hero", it's a military line vs a fantasy line. Not everyone around the world follows a line of a particular country soldiers, while a fantasy setting is more accepted. besides, i don't think Joe collectors would be willing to pay 400-500 bucks for a Flagg (considering how much the Castle is costing). We saw this happening with the Skystriker, or bigger vehicles... just as Hasbro is not too loyal to fans, fans aren't too loyal to Joes neither.

It's a shame that a company that has worked so hard to correct it's problems (that they unprepared for at the beginning as the Classics line was received way better than they could have predicted) and still gets labelled this way because of their past mistakes.

Untell hasbro starts treating GIJoe the way lego is treated you can expect more of the same. Lego has cartoons, and endless wave of comercials for its product, and store reps keeping the shelves fully stocked...what do we have? A forth quarter hail marry on a ninja movie...oh yeah lego beat us to the nina craze to.

In any case I think the problem lies more with the fans, the "I'll wait for Ross'ers" as I like to call them. Also, the fan gets tapped pretty hard by the GI JOE Collector's Club every year. I'd personally like to see the club drop the vehicle exclusives at the convention and leave that money to put toward a yearly Hasbro exclusive GI JOE vehicle or playset of some quality and size. Still, will GI JOE fans be forward-thinking enough to save money toward something like this? I see Joe fans talking about buying product from all kinds of other toy lines. Maybe the problem is that by the time something cool GI JOE-related get releases that there is no more discretionary income left to buy it, hence the dallying around hoping it'll go on clearance, which is obviously a shoot-oneself-in-the-foot approach the hobby over the long term. Everyone is pre-ordering a He-Man Castle Greyskull. Maybe instead that money should be going in the bank and we should all be waving it at Hasbro saying "GI JOE playset, please!"
