I know I am going to start a riot here, but here goes anyway........
After reading a number of different posts here about upcoming 25th figures and also seeing a number of people's member names, avatars, signatures and what not, there are two things I can not understand. One makes a little more sense than the other b/c it seems so popular, but regardless, neither make sense to me - Why are Shipwreck and Quick Kick both so popular? Now AGAIN, I don't mean to start any fights or light anyone's parrot's tail feathers on fire or anything like that , but I just don't get it? Shipwreck I can see is clearly the more popular of the two, and I guess it kind of makes sense as he is a sailor, and I guess that kind fits into the classic line up of a soldier, sailor, pilot, and marine from the old Joe days. I mean but don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against him either, h*ll - everyone who's in my family has been in the Navy , but I guess it just doesn't make sense to me. I think the biggest thing that gets me about him is the outfit? I don't know, it's just always looked kind of out of place to me compared to the rest of the Joes, even from when I was a kid back in the 80's (not to mention the parrot too?). I mean, it's not a bad figure/uniform, I guess I just like the Collector's Club '07 version (v10) of him - http://www.yojoe.com/action/07/shipwreck10.shtml better than I do the original or the 25th. Now what is in my opinion and MY OPINION alone (you don't have to agree with me) was that making him into a SEAL in the current comic/pre-25th version was a mistake. :( It just seems like to me someone else at either Hasbro or DDP felt the same way as I did and wanted to make up for it. IMHO if he was popular as just a sailor, then they should have just left ol' Hector alone and left him a sailor then. Besides, it's not like we don't have enough SEALs to go around with in the first place in Joe line. Now Quick Kick? That's a different story. Never has made sense to me, never will. :( And then when you take Quick Kick and compare him to Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow? Please, even the the idea seems silly to me compared to those two strong characters. Ok, again, these are just my thoughts and ramblings on a late Monday night. Just some things that have been rattling around in my head for weeks looking at all the messages and when chasing after figures. Let anchors and throwing stars start to fly! J/K - Eric ......and please no one take offense to this. I don't expect anyone to like what I like or for my thoughts to be how anyone else should feel. These are just some things I have been thinking about for a while and wanted to share. |

I think its just that they are like novelty characters. You like em for their, uh, skills and such. I personally like Shippy's Village People outfit but would like to see a ddp version of him. As for Quick Kick like Ship its mostly the cartoon portrayal.

I agree with that, I like the DDP version MUCH better than I ever did the Marvel or cartoon one.
Now HE makes sense to me as far as the character goes, or for being a SEAL. Again, JMHO. Eric |

When I was a kid, I think Shipwreck because of his antics on the cartoon. He was a wise-@$$. Also, he was different from other characters. A sailor dude with a parrot. I remember thinking GI Joe's with animals...Shipwreck and Mutt were awesome figures because of that.
As for Quick Kick, I think it was because he was the unlikely GI Joe. Everyone was all military-based and at the time, he was just different. But by saying that, if I knew characters like Quick Kick would lead to really crazy characters and the Street Fighter line, I wouldn't dig it as much. Also, bare in mind that during the year of Quick Kick, those of us who were kids/teens of the 80's were inundated with Kung-Fu/Super Ninja programming on television and during that time, I know a lot of my friends and school were watching these shows, Sho Kosugi "Return of the Ninja" movies and buying Ninja magazine, ninja stars and ninja outfits. But again, that was how things were as a kid growing up in the 80's. So, that's my opinion.

I liked Shipwreck but he was never my favorite. He was just a great character as the typical sailor. I also recall him being a wisecracker so he was entertaining. I was never a big fan of Quick Kick, My original QK had part of his arm burnt off in battle. I think I just had him because a cousin gave him to me. I think Quick Kick's popularity, and reason for Hasbro creating him in the first place, was the growing interest in martial arts at the time. At first I wanted to say Hasbro was just trying to make another Snare Eyes-like character, but I don't think that's it. Then I remembered the movie Karate Kid, which came out in 84, Quick Kick was released in 85. |

Mike T (robot Sonic) once said that had Bazooka (or quick kick or Dr. Mindbender or even the Dreadnoks IMO) been released at any point after the golden age of RAH, he would have been ridiculed by the fans today.

as for Shipwreck...there were A LOT of episodes of the cartoon based around him and even the episodes that were not based on, him he was most of the time featured very prominently, so I think it's ingrained in us from childhood that we like him so much
Wow, the grammar in that is awful...don't care |

Yes, for me it's that Shipwreck is a big part of the G.I.Joe Cartoon I remember so foundly...I loved his weapons and his outfit on the figure and later in life when I finally got the FLAGG I bought over 25+ just to crew the thing....I always had the plan of switching out the head so I would have a full crew of different peeps, but never got around to it. And as of right now no room to display the grand ship in a proper place.
As for Quick Kick, whenever I played G.I.Joe when I was young...he always put up a good fight but died in the end...ha ha....Mark Down Recondo as a Joe I REALLY Want!!! He survived about 85% of the battles! Mr. Savage |
