as a non fanatical joe collector,(i buy just the figures i like and usually for customising purposes)im intrigued by the concept of army building,so i was wondering if some of you pro army builders would be able to explain what drives you to army build??how many people on the tank actively build??is it common amongst joe collectors??is it down to a certain figure you love so much you want multiples??is it because you like having row upon row all lined up??or do you feel army building is needed to complete a collection??let me know your thoughts!!

okies i'll start then . I army build but initially i only wanted to get say 4 ot 5 of a trooper type figure .but as time has passed one i've ended up with something like 40 cobra blue shirts. dunno what it is about them I just love seeing them in a huge rank and file pic.
I don't feel the need to army build every version of a paticular character (ie i don't need to have every duke made ) but some I take exception to . Destro and firefly, major bludd fav cobras flint and beachhead on the joes..

Interesting question. My principle reason for collecting figures is to make dio-stories. To that end, I army build certain figures (IGs, various Viper types, etc) as my story requires.

it starts out with the casual interest that it would be cool to have multiple of the troops like you always wanted as a child, then evolves into a compulsion where you can't stand the thought of not buying a figure you know someone else certainly will buy and you start buying them just to keep others from having them.

to me it's the same reason why I enjoy Warhammer 40K when you have enough figures for a full scale battle scene (or even a small skirmish it really seems to come alive). It's gorgeous in it's own way.

I don't army build, per se, but I have bought multiples of certain figures on several occasions for 1 of 2 reasons: 1)they make great customs or 2)they are such a good all-around figure that you can utilize them in many settings. I don't do the whole lining up thing, although I think it is very impressive.
I bet I've bought close to 20 RIA Dukes from the RoC line, but I've used so many for customs that I don't have an actual intact RIA Duke. I did the same with Para-Vipers when they came out in the ME line. I just couldn't pass one up. Anyway, that's my thoughts. I know there are differing opinions because we have quite a few people here with IMPRESSIVE armies!

for me... as a kid, I was always ridiculously frustrated having joes attack a cobra base and only having like one cobra soldier or one bat or one viper to defend it.. was sorta lame, since soo many swarmed the joes in the comics, the cartoons, etc.
cobra was an organization, and mine just felt like a detention club where 2 dudes have missing thumbs and the rest have mismatched rifles. so now that I'm an adult? I believe a bit of over compensating for childish impulses to build a cobra army to mimic how I thought Cobra should have been. That, and boredom. There is an absolute thrill to opening a joe, it's a small childish bit of happiness that no matter how many joes I get, is still there. So when new lines are further apart, it apeases that need.

For display purposes (when I someday have the room to display).
Some of it is from when, as a kid, I only had 1 of each and it's hard to have battles when there are only 5 bad guys and 20 good guys. And my OCD telling me that I need some squads.
