I have sadly come to that conclusion. It is four days before Christmas. Every Wal-Mart that I visit is overflowing with the same Joe stuff that it has had for weeks, while the Transformers are nearly sold out. Even Indiana Jones is moving! Joes are not even being considered as last minute gifts. This is truly sad, as I had hopes some kids might want these for Christmas. I guess something is necessary to turn them on to a product, whether it is a cartoon, movie, etc. Here's hoping Resolute and the 2009 movie do the trick.

Kids would not want Joes because they never heard of it. No movie or tv show during their lifetime. Even if you buy a kid a Joe right now, I don't think he'd like it as much as the toys they see on saturday morning cartoons. The only reason they would be remotely interested in them would be because of their parents who grew up in the Joe generation. But I think the new movie should change that a bit and then we'd have even more competition finding figs.

Rambo was a disillusioned Nam vet who would rather blow up a small town then accept the fact that You have to take shit from the cops now and then. He sounds like My kind of guy but still...not really subjects kids would naturaly embrace. Rambo had a cartoon, and a line of toys The Ghostbusters did straight shots of whiskey, chain smoked , and went around calling people "dickless". Again..they sound like My kind of folks, but not the first thing that would come to mind when thinking of things kids would like. Last edited by delta; 12-22-2008 at 03:02 AM.. |

Things are very picked over here, no DVD packs left, a couple of firebats is about it. People are buying them here almost as fast as Star wars. TF are warming pegs tho.
OT, I saw a couple of cool Corp Vehicles this weekend. 1 was a very Oktober Guard-ish 6x6.

I have only seen one child with a Joe in his hand that he wanted his parents to buy. It was the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow Comic Pack. That is it. They sell slow enough around here to assume that there's not much desire for them from anyone other than adult collectors. My son and his buddies had a brief interest in them this past summer for a about a couple of weeks. I really enjoyed it. I gave my son all of my extra Joes and as many vehicles that I could part with. They would set them up and play all day outside. Now it's all about Star Wars and LEGOs.
I agree that the movie will definitely bring some much deserved attention to the Joe universe. I NEVER heard a child utter a word about Transformers until the 2007 movie. After that I could hardly go to WalMart or Target without seeing a kid in the Transformers section asking for Jazz or a Bumblbee. It was great. |

I disagree.
At my shop the local Kids love the Joes. The love of the Joes comes form the parents and the inexpensiveness of the figures compared to the others available. To be honest I think kids will watch the cartoon anyway. I sell the Gears of Wars figures to 10 year olds and they know all about the game because they play it with their parents. Same way with the Joes. Mom and Dad will watch the cartoon and so will the kids. The movie will spur the sells as well. Kids are buying them so don't be so down harted because you see them at your local store warming pegs. That's not the same everywhere. Last edited by Phalsis; 12-22-2008 at 01:21 PM.. |

Its sad but true, most of the joe love is still from older collectors. Kids these days are too focused on TV or computer games to realize what real toys are unless they are pumped by some multi-million dollar visual.

I think you forgett all the crazy violent shit we used to love when we were kids.

We grew up in a less politically correct era. We had Ghostbusters, and Rambo and Delta Force... Hell even the Karate Kid had foul language, drug use (or at least the rolling of a joint) and the hero getting his ass beat on a regular basis. And I can't speak for everyone, but I grew up fine. Let's look at Robotech. By the end of the Macross saga everyone but Rick, Lisa & Minmei were dead. They killed off major characters and it was one of my favorite toons of the 80's because of the realism and emotional impact. I think people underestimate kids. I believe this cartoon would do very well on regular TV and bring the kids back to GI Joe... give the kids a video game to go with it and it could be even stronger than it was in the 80's |

Unless you are raising a kid and sharing your love of the joes on them, they don't care who they are. They only want Fen 10 and that Crapkugan stuff!

I haven't read all the replies, btu I can tell you that the large chains have uninformed managers working their toy departments. That is one reason why certain lines sell better than others. Some of my local stores have a ton of overstock of the same old peg warmers.
I think this has a lot to do with the fact that they didn't predict that they'd sell out of the early waves so quickly and now think they need to order 30 cases of each wave. Well, that's just not true. Now they're stuck with 30 cases of wave 8 & 9. Other stores have been mroe steady, only ordering 3 cases of each wave no matter the earlier demand. Smart thinking IMO. The pegs have never been empty, but they're never loaded with peg warmers, giving them room both on shelves and in the budget to keep ordering new waves. The other key factor I'm finding is placement. Some stores have Joes next to Star Wars, and others have then next to TF's. Some next to batman, and others next to Marvel Legends or wrestling figures. I find they sell the best when placed next to Star Wars and other like sized/themed(war) figures. There are many factors to the whole supply and demand balance, but I can't say that pegs space indicates whether or not kids are into them. I know as a kid, my parents would never let me get more than one of each figure. Sadly, that included Cobra Troopers and Vipers and other troop builders. I'm guessing most parents haven't changed much.
