well maybe in 800 million years when aliens are xcavating the planet and they find all of these joes in thier AFA90 sealed acrylic cases in steel vaults they will look back on our race and say "wow they really rated thier action figures like this? Must have been som ewierd ritual or "zoo" process!" and take them home as priceless treasures.
Like Beloq says in Raiders, "Look at this. It's worthless- ten dollars from a vendor in the streets. But I take it, bury in the sand for a thousand years and it becomes priceless...like the ark." /emote gets shovel and heads for the backyard.... |

well isnt sort of weird in the first place that we have miniature figures of humans with a huge made up story to go along with it, and it originated two decades ago and we are still going along with it

If you are collecting modern toys for what they might be worth one day and you are buying two of everything, I have a suggestion. Rather than gamble away $200-$300 a month at Walmart, invest that money in Walmart stock. In 25 years it will have earned as much as the entire 1982 line is worth now if you had them all MOMC. These are hard to find because, like you said, we are buying them all up. Who didn't want to build that army of Cobra Troopers they dreamed of as a kid? But look at the shelves now. Full of figures that were hard to find a few months ago. In the new era of collecting, with ebay and internet sites devoted to what's new and who is the first to have it corporations deem what is collectable, and it is most valuable when it is brand new, then depreciates as the market is saturated. Let's face it...how many of us stashed away a v.1 Storm Shadow, or Sears Exclusive HISS as a kid? How many of us have stashed away EVERYTHING that the new line has to offer. Bottom line, if we are in it b/c we think they will be worth something one day we are sadly mistaken. So to answer your question, yes I have really thought about this.

I don't plan on any return on my investment and everything gets opened. I collect for me. And if prices don't go up, then great. I'll be able to pick stuff up cheaper.

I started collecting the 25th line when I first stumbled wave 1 at a local Wally World. It brought be back to a when I was a kid who loved the Joes!
Before that day the only thing I collected was deer heads and antlers (I'm a huge hunter). But since that day I have bought two of everything...one to keep carded in a star case and one to tear open like a kid again. Why? Because I can...because it keeps me off the streets...because it gives me something to do after work...because someday my stuff may be of some value...who the hell knows? I just do it because it's fun...and I hold out a tiny bit of hope that when I'm 65 and I sell my complete collection of graded figures...i can set up all my loose figures on the floor and stand in the middle of them and scream at the top of my lungs 'I'M RICH BITCH!' Doc

These toys will not be worth anything more than face value in the future.
Simple supply and demand. There will be a massive supply of MOMC carded figures in the future, because so many people are properly caring for them now. Last edited by samjjones; 12-15-2008 at 10:22 PM.. |

I collect simply for the fun of it and to fill the void of the vintage collection I once had as a kid. I'll probably sell some of it in the future to break even a little bit but don't expect any big returns on it. I do have black timber so that is a good return on that one purchase anyway.

What kills me the most is those folks who as soon as they get the new wave (ie. wave 13), they send them off in a sealed case to get AFA graded.
people....these are not going to be worth ANYTHING in a few years, trust me. Your "AFA U90 COBRA Diver" will not even be worth the money you spent to grade it. |
