Stores stock by supply and demand. If there's no demand (sales off the shelves) then they won't supply (order more and order often). So again, by us turning to the online retailers (because we're impatient for stores to order, carry or restock) then we're hurting the chances of them wanting to order, carry and restock.
When I was hunting at the stores, I didn't mind that online stores were getting the product two months earlier than the stores. It was that in those two months, the stores had nothing. |

Yeah, but why would the stores stock for sales that won't be there?

I buy from both really. I mean, recently I have been buying online more, but I still buy stuff at the stores, too. The stores around me have a lot of product so I know people are buying them. I'd say that the majority, rather I'd guess, that the majority of people that buy online are collectors and the like. I love finding stuff at retail, but I can be somewhat impatient, too. And I do like having things sent right to me. But really, you can buy anything online these days, not just toys.

I'm not talking toys, I'm talking just G.I. Joe
At this point it's really a collector's line. The kid-interest isn't there enough to support the line. Star Wars does good because it's got both, collectors and kid-interest. It's really the kid-interest that does the retail sales and drives the growth of the line. Indy died quickly because there wasn't a strong collector's market for it (and really, the collector's interest in Joe is in the nostalgia value) and the kids just didn't flock to it. What kid, of today's era, would really be all that inerested in Indiana Jones? The hero is from the 40s/50s and is an old man. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was done for the old school Indy fans, and the majority of thing wouldn't buy a toyline. I know some of us bought some Indy stuff, but beyond getting 1 Indy figure and a couple of other ones, did we go hogwild over it like we do G.I. Joe or Star Wars or Transformers? No. And because the kid-interest wasn't there. The line died.

I buy a little bit of both, I mainly order through BBTS, and if I see the item early at a store (which doesn't happen alot) I will cancel the online order. Also if I like something enough to open, I will buy multiples (extra 2 usually) so coming from me, and I am sure there are others we buy from both.
Also it doesn't hurt to have stuff that actually sells, and not the revision crap we saw for quite awhile. |

I think you are answering your own question. If Indy couldn't survive and GI Joe can then obviously it hasn't hurt the line from growing.

Indy isn't the same as Joes. Was anyone troop building Indy? Did anyone go out and buy entire waves? From what I've heard, it was select figures that people were after, not the entire line. Only Indy interested me to buy. I liked the vehicles and that was it.

I only buy my Joes at stores and don't buy online unless it's the older stuff. So I know I am trying to help support the stores with sales. I like the thrill of the hunt when you go down the aisle and bam there is something new that you are looking for. I can't see buying from the online stores as I have heard several horror stories here about things getting butchered with the mail or orders getting canceled.

No joking, I think it is a yes and no....
Yes for the reason that the ones that collect revert to online because hunting hurts the pocket book and also time is money. If we didnt have the scalpers out snagging up everything, I do think that more of us would be out hunting in the local stores. No for the reason that retailers have had poor selections of items. I my self have not yet found the new SkyHawk (Ghost Hawk) for the reasons that they are not updating stock... I only got back into my Joe's after finding the 25th S/E and Timber and 88 S/S hitting up a TRU one day. I'm not a hard core collector like most of you, but when the ones I want are almost impossible to find in stores and also everything is a repaint, it makes me stay home and make trades with the guys that do have them.... Oh yeah, I dont buy anything online.... If I do it's only because I have to....

I think the revision waves hurt and helped the line.
It helped by putting figures out there that people had missed. I think that the majority of the 2007 line was mostly ignored in the stores and with 2008 selling well Hasbro wanted to get those figures into the hands of folks. I think it hurt because it clogged up more shelf space and didn't get off the shelf space so quickly because most of the Joe-buyers already had 'em (from online or from 2007). I liked 'em, at first, because it let me get figures I had missed in 2007. But now, I just see 'em warming the pegs and taking up shelf space from new stuff. Stores won't order new stuff, or put it on the shelves, if the pegs are full.
