But is it hurting the growth of the line? As it is right now, the line is basically at about what it will be at as far as terms (relatively). It may go up, it may go down. But the amount of new customers joining the line isn't that great.
The less new product in the stores, the less the new customers will be joining the line. So if there's no call for new product in the stores because alot of the newer stuff is bought online first, the line won't grow.

Right, so why would the store order up Wave 13, if Wave 10 is still on the shelves because the people that want Wave 13 are getting it online?

I think a lot of the future of the line will be based upon the support it gets from Hasbro. Right now we are still looking at just a few pegs to share the 3-3/4" and 12" figs and a tiny little area for dvd sets, vehicles and the like (ignoring the Combat Heroes infestation). I certainly would not call this major support from Hasbro compared to their other lines.
That being said, this is bound to increase as Hasbro starts pushing the movie line at the retailers. Question will be, will the Modern Era have just a couple pegs or just be pushed off the shelves by the movie merchandise? Online retailers, they'll keep stocking more and more based on the popularity of the previous pre-orders and the last wave's sale figures. As long as Hasbro provides them enough inventory, they have nothing to slow them down. If they line continues to grow, they'll be right there with product ready to pre-order and ship. |

short answer is yes, but that is just one of the problems, I think the biggest issue is pre-orders, online sellers who pe-sale will most likely order just enough to cover pre-orders and have little stock if any, they make their money in advance! ppl who pre-order online will get wave 13 when wave 11 is still just surfacing in the stores, so we are seeing what we should be seeing in the stores, but most already got it months earlier!!! because of preordering, which creates more and more shelf warmers, which perpetuates the online buying for the next wave, joe collectors want their joes first!! before the waves hits the stores, they are impatient and it creates the in store sales issues and peg warmer issues, my suggestion is stop preordering, stsrt going to the store and buying, and for every figure yo buy online buy 2 in the stores! these days the only ppl that are buying from stores are the scalpers!

Is it hurting the growth of the line? My opinion is absolutely not.
Even though a lot of us buy online, there are still a ton of people who buy these in the stores. Most army builders probably buy their "clones", if you will, at stores and not on the internet. Some of us are also under-estimating the power of the casual collectors and the kids who also buy these at retail.

Will the line become online only? I hope not and I don't believe it will. Overall the majority of the Joe sales are through stores(off the shelf). The secondary market for example someone buying it then putting online or like my store putting my stock online are the majority of internet sales. According to my distributor the majority of Joe sales are off the rack with a strong secondary market on the internet through trade and second hand sales.
And it bombed, big time. The line was produced in smaller numbers (but only just) than normal retail. In a 6 month period, we got 12 single packed action figure (in very retro packaging), 4 RAH based comic packs, 2 mid size vehicles (similar to the $15 range out now) AND two large vehicles, bigger than anything out at retail now (the amazing Rocc and RHINO). The second assortment (6 singles, 2 CPs) were actually HALVED in production compared to the first wave due to weak sales. The assortment of singles in 2006 was halved from THAT number and still languished after being sent to TRU to revive interest in the line. Darthbrent's numbers are fairly accurate, at the end of the day, even a majority of COLLECTORS will pick up their toys at retail rather than online. Collectors (and those few collectors that will order online) will never be able to carry the line we want. WE just don't have the numbers, and should GI Joe 3.75 leave retail, it will NOT come back without retailer support, like the 25th got.

It needs a new generation to keep it going for years. That's the growth. For there to be a 50th anniversary, the line needs new material and new fans. How many new people are grabbing this stuff at retail? And is the internet sales preventing new stuff from hitting retail at faster and better rates? For every figure bought online, that's one less bought in retail and one more figure that sits and warms the peg. That's one less spot for another different figure to take and a new fan to grab that different figure.

More people buy toys out at the stores than you may realize. Not everybody buys online for a lot of different reasons.

Honestly, it wouldn't bother me that much if GI Joe Modern Era became a mainly online driven line, while the movie line got more of the B & M stores. Hasbro knows darn well the demand that their is for the Modern Era line from how quickly HTS sells out everything decent that Hasbro feeds them. If they truly began to supply HTS, BBTS, EE and the like well enough to meet demand, I wouldn't be hurt by precious retail shelf space being used for the movie line while the promotion is going on.
Then they can phase the ME line back onto the retailers shelves as the movie toy inventory begins to wane and the line has become a bit more of a household name again. Ultimately, they would end up with a hybridized line of ME, Resolute (or whatever animated series it spawns) and Movie as the new Joe (hopefully a re-established line of the order of SW and Transformers). I know that's a bit optimistic, but at least the ME line could be supported throughout the movie explosion and if all goes as planned, the line will become a powerhouse again. |

The bottom line is.. do internet sales hurt the Brick & Motor Stores.. Of course they do.. Does it hurt the GI Joe line, not unless its After Market because sales are sales and Hasbro is still getting money.
The problem though is we are overpaying because we are ordering online. |
