Thanks again everyone for the input, addressing individual posts below...
This was my understanding as well, but I wasn't aware that the dye was that selective. Is this why the chest plate etc ended up the color it did? The plastic takes the black, but the paint reacts differently? Also, dye can have unwanted side effects. It can fade over time, if not sealed properly. You generally can't paint lighter colors over it without it bleeding thru the paint over time. From what others have said here, it sounds like they confirm you have a legit one. But honestly, this one is relatively easy to reproduce figurewise. A bottle of black RIT dye, some black paint and 30-45 minutes and you're done, especially since the originals logo is already silver, and won't be affected. Congrats on the find! I always wanted the hate tank. |

Cool, thanks for the info. And yeah, I had considered trying to make my own... and I might have knowing that the "hard" parts (logo etc) would have been done automagically. I'll probably never know if it's really authentic or not. But it did come with everything it was supposed to, so even if the figure is a repro, someone repro'd the card too, as well as bundling the mini Megatron gun.
On a side note, I dug a bit deeper into feedback. The seller who had the figures up individually is also the buyer for the set of three that was up a few weeks ago. The seller also buys Joe exclusives and Sideshow items. So unless there's some really elaborate behind the scenes finagling between Joe sellers on eBay, the seller bought the set of 3 and didn't like them, or bought them with the intention of flipping, and had nothing to do with the authenticity. |

My friend seemed very happy with the Backstop figure. I looked at the pics in the auction and I could not tell any noticeable difference between mine and his. Much like you, he is happy he has a CJC figure.
