I tried to get at least 2 of the troops when i was a kid, but it really was not my decision to buy the same figure twice.
But one trooper i used as a singular guy was Alley-Viper as a bounty hunter. |

i had a Thrasher that went through the lawnmower, losing an arm and gaining some face scars...blamed it on a Thunder machine accident ...replaced the shredded stump with a BAT arm...he became Cobras project after the BAT program

And there's another one I forgot about. Seriously, though, I remember playing with the TARGAT, and I had it so his faceplate was bulletproof, but he couldn't see, so in a spectacular mid-air battle, Duke jumped out of a stolen POGO and managed a sniper shot right when the plate was closing. SE also managed to get a shuriken to bounce of Alley Viper's shield into the eyeslits of his helmet. Seriously, nothing was cooler than GI Joe when you're a kid... |

I'm absolutely loving reading these stories and setups you guys used when playing with joes. It totally takes me back to those days when I'd get all my joes out and then take a minute to imagine a storyline and then go wild from scene to scene, all the while coming up with new plot twists as I went along.
Not to mention doing the voices of the guys at the same time. I don't know about you guys, but I always did my best to mimic the voices from the cartoon while I was playing. ;) Back on topic though...I can't think of any "army builders" I used as individual characters. As I recall, in my world while I was playing, troopers were troopers, my one Crimson Guard was one of many guards for Tomax and Xamot and CC, and so on.

As a kid, I only ever had one of each toy. Though I would sometimes have more then one version of the same character.

As a kid I only had one of each Viper I owned for the most part, do they were all pretty much individual characters.
Now for the inverse of the question, I bought four extra Wraiths to troop build a little. |

I only had one of each figure, so had to pretend they were singular characters or that there were more you couldn't see.

I don't remember having multiples of anyone, except for sometimes when I got duplicates as gifts. I never really thought of army-building as a kid--I had no desire for multiples of any Cobra trooper...though I do remember having 2 Eels, but that was just by chance.
Now, I don't really ever imagine myself troop-building. I'd have to have unlimited excess cash. I'm perfectly content with just one of each. |
