Part of what drives the price up or down is supply. Since there seems to be a ton of Docs out there, it may drive the price down. Not to mention, there are a lot of vintage figures (which should be more rare) that sell for less than $100. My point is here is that collectors are also comparing prices across figures.
If you went to eBay and saw Doc with a Buy it Now for $90. Let's assume that that is a bargain since you would get a 10% discount, would you still buy the figure? |

I dont look at these as investments or worry about the money Value...if something is too much but I need it....then I guess I dont need it........there is more to life than spending too much on a figure thats simple not worth it because Fanboys deem it to be........ Of course the ones saying its worth $50 or more.....most likely have a store on Ebay. Then again those are the ones who swear they want to hook up tankers (If you did why not list your items here instead of Ebay) so they show you there Ebay listings with there jacked up prices.......yes I know their money, Their price, but also their greed............ |

An original GI Joe 12 Inch Nurse is just a piece of plastic that probably cost less than $5. But you can't find one at that price.
A USS Flag only cost $100 MIB at the store, but you can't find one at that price. You can't even find one at that price loose. When you buy something at a store, are they not making a profit? If it is okay for a store to make a profit why not an eBayer? Are they not investing their time, money, and energy into delivering a product to a customer? I remember my father always complaining about prices in the store, "Hell, it only cost them a nickle to make that, why are they charging me $5?". Even as a kid I thought that mindset was wrong. Lets say it did cost a nickles worth of materials to make something. Then you have payroll, utilities, insurance, shipping, lease, fees, theft, errors, and all sorts of cost associated with just getting it to market. Then you add a distributor that wants to make money on it, a retailer that wants to make money on. Trust me I know from years of working in the toy business that times have changed for the worse these days compared to 5 years ago and after. The retailers have cut out the distributors and gone straight to the manufacturer for product. Most distributors have gone out of business because of it. That should have lowered the price but they raised it instead. Since manufacturers refuse to deal with small companies and they are no distributors to go to then small companies were forced to use the box stores as the distributor so that they could retail on eBay. The retailers watched the secondary market and decided that if a figure sold on average on eBay for $8 that they could sell it for that too, thus the across the board price increase. Now the box stores have killed off most distributors and are now killing off most ebay retailers as well. (The distributors that will sell to the little guy are also competing with the little guy by selling on eBay and Amazon themselves, which also hurts the eBay retailer) So we all have choices as collectors and one of the main choices is this, do you want to support the box stores that are ultimately killing these lines because they do not know the product and they will not listen to the manufacturers any longer and who raised prices for GREED? Or do you support the distributors who are good, but unknowingly are killing these lines by competing with the retailers they are selling to, or should I say are not selling to any longer? Or do you support the little guy who runs an honest business and is just trying to make a living by trading on eBay, even if it may cost a little more (And creates the secondary market that has kept these lines alive in the past)? Or do you complain about all three and have your own hand in killing the line? Toy business is not easy folks, it's hard to keep everyone happy. It's great fun to be in the business but it has become 10 times more work for 10 times less money, which is why you see many little guys closing up shop. When you look at my store CTGLinks.com, you will notice there is not very many new items. There is a reason our focus is on old stock, and tehy are all listed above. |

Either way when you open that CP you accept that you receive goods for the $9.99 price tag. You may not have intended to open the items but did just to get the DOC. You could have waited to buy him from another person. Once you open the goods you are receiving the benefit of opened goods and a sticker towards a $5 figure. I think what some are saying is that it's not like you paid $9.99 per sticker. You received an item in exchange for $9.99 that happened to come with a sticker towards a $5 figure.
Everyone seems to want to be compensated $9.99 x 6 figures. That would make DOC worth $60 and he's not. exactly what i said but someone decided to 'edit' my post. Last edited by XVoodooDollX; 11-17-2008 at 01:07 PM.. |
