I'd go with riding crop number one. It would seem that the number twos are harder to find if they're anything like the Docs were supposed to be.
You're right its not cheap. Though I'd suspect that HTS is probably getting a decent deal to have "experts" at AFA grade them. They did the same thing with the SDCC Destros a while back. I'm gonna have to check my EELs again, I'm not even sure I saw a casting number in mine. |

I'm sorry, but the simple fact that there is a molded difference in one weapon to another is a variant. Don't get me wrong, I do not collect # variants on accessories because it could go on forever; but a fact's a fact. Facehammer, I am very glad you have given some more insight to the molding process. You'd think that information would be readily available in the community. I completely understand that they come from the same mold but I think people are misconstruing terms or following a false sense of logic to keep them from pursuing this avenue. Like FH said, Hasbro doesn't put these numbers on the accessories to drive us nuts, it's quality control. Our very obsession contorts this into having every different version of a figure. I myself go to great lengths to predict and prepare for figure and accessory variations because I have been fortunate to obtain a comprehensive RAH collection and find variants an exciting way to keep me active in the hobby. I don't chase production variances (ie Cobra Officer's eyebrows) but some people do. Let them spend their money as they seem fit. The community as a whole will probably accept this variant because it was sold by HTS but this will not set a prescience for #'d figures (yes some figures have these #'s as well, especially 25th figs) or accessories but if you think it's neat, great. Even one of my most intense variant collecting friends gave up on # variations with the 82-94 stuff after about 3 months. He said it was too much.

Yes. A number 1 vs a number 2 is different than a number 2. But I'd refer to this as one of the nitpicking variants. And there will be people that collect those.
Here is my example on how crazy things can get... I'm primarily a Star Wars collector and hang out a couple Star Wars sites etc... One board in particular has a great vintage discussion board. In the vintage line, there are actually guys that will collect on certain types of the vintage. Like the 2 packs or multipacks that came from JC Penney. What really caught my eye the other day was a collection of only bagged figures. Figures that were still in the Kenner sealed bags... There were variations on those because of what was printed on the bags. So for everybody that collects stuff, there are people that get waaaaaaay more into it than others. Some people will be happy to have a Snaggletooth in a sealed Kenner bag. But others will ask "where on the bag is Kenner printed" because it matters to them. The point that I've really been trying to make is that when you are dealing with a multi cavity mold, (most likely a 2 cavity mold) there should be no difference in the rarity of a 1 vs. a 2. Unless there was a problem during production and for some reason the number 1 or 2 was having a higher rate of defect. But in the numbers that we are talking about for a production run for Joes, these pieces were probably all cranked out over the course of a few shifts at the factory. I'm just trying to be a small voice of reason to those guys that really want to pursue the number variant. Please don't overpay just to get a 2 because someone says it's more rare. It's not more rare. It is just a different number. And in our current economy, if I can save you a couple bucks with this info then I feel I've done a service the fine folks here at the Tank. So I suppose we all agree that everyone collects differently and that those hunting mold cavity numbers shouldn't pay more for one number than the other, right? |

The reason they get away with this madness is people keep buying into that "variant" craze. People so desperately want a variant, so they consider anything and everything as a possibility.

This will fade, just as it did with Star Wars... a slight variant in Star Wars used to cause utter chaos... Now it seems as thought nobody really pays any attention unless it is really significant. (like paint color or a different figure entirely...i.e. the Saga Legends 501st trooper last year... )

Let me use some old debate tactics and make my reply one point at a time:

Intent is the key here. According to the Hasbro catalog, the Wraith figure was only released once, but with a variant version and a regular version. The clear version was produced in fewer numbers than the regular version; thus creating a "variant" of the Wraith figure. Tiger Force Duke was a completely different release of the Duke figure and was never intended to be the same character.....this is evident by the different packaging acknowledging such.
