This reminds me of the Stinky Pete character in Toy Story 2 who turned evil because he was kept MISB. What a commentary against keeping toys carded!
As far as investments go, action figures are NOT a very good deal. For one thing, the market is much more saturated with new figs today than in the late 70s and 80s when Star Wars, GI Joe, and Transformers first came out. Those vintage lines revolutionized the action figure industry at a time when no one thought of toys as "collectibles" let alone something to speculate on. Early Star Wars and Joes which were new and unproven were underproduced as a result MOCs can go for hundreds each now. If I had a Delorean and could get it up to 88mph my first stop would be the toy isle at my local Target circa 1982 and I'd clean it out of Joes and Star Wars, but the reality is spending the same amount of $ on those toy lines today will not have the same "return on my investment" 25 years from now that it would've back then.
It wasn't until the 90's that speculators really started buying up multiples of figs (this was mirrored in comics too) and keeping "mint copies/MOC" versions to sell in the future. But with the increased demand came a proportionate increase in production thus diluting the collectible value of it all. It's like a vicious circle.
To put it in financial terms, even IF they "double or triple" in value, unless you have thousands of action figures they're hardly going to be worth the time and effort in 25 years to sell them (if you do it piecemeal), and you usually take a loss if you try to sell them as a lot. If you spend $1000 on joes today and hold onto them for 25 years you'll be able to sell them for $3000? Whoop-de-doo. If you invested $1000 in a 8% money market account for 25 years (the average market return over the past 25 years) you'd have $6,848. And you don't have to do any work for it (hunting them down in the first place, not to mention STORING them for 25 years, then selling them off).
In conclusion, I would argue against keeping toys mint/sealed strictly for investment value. However if that really makes you happy to look at and have, then no harm no fowl, to each his own. However I vote for opening and enjoying your figs. I do have quite a few 25th that I haven't opened yet, but I'm holding on to those to give my kids someday (what fun they'll have getting to open an entire collection!). I do enjoy the vintage box/card art and have recently begun collecting boxes and cards which I can enjoy just as much if they're empty. Collecting is something to do because it brings us joy not money.

I have never collected Joes for how much they are worth in dollars and cents.
I put the stickers on a Mint Sky-Striker that was unassembled.
I put the stickers on my first USS FLAGG because I wanted to USE it.
I don't plan to sell my toys for a profit. Sometimes I can but that is not my goal. I buy what I like, and display it when I can.
I collected the MARVEL Joe comic back when you couldn't find the back issues because they were worthless!! Comic book stores said they might have some somwhere but they didn't put them out because they would just take up floor space...
I like my toys, its just that simple.
I have a few unopened figures because I could afford to buy a couple extra.
I'm not deluded into thinking my collection is worth thousands of dollars.
The boxes you see in my photo albums are opened and empty!!
I photograph my toys in dioramas in my spare time, and try to show other people my efforts on this site.
The GI JOE cartoon was my favorite, and it helped to teach me alot about patriotism, good & evil all while having fun. I'm not saying that GI JOE is shakespear but I like it. I don't care if its not always realistic. Thats part of the fun!
I just really like my GI JOE toys, but they do not own me. I own them.
PLease! I need your help to find; LOOSE:
1. Comic Pack October Guard Figures.
2. 1987 Cobra Maggot
3. Cobra Adder
4. Cobra Imp
5. Cobra Bunker parts or complete
6. Cobra Rifle Range parts or complete
7. Loose Pit Commandos, complete or not
8. Loose 25th greenshirts, complete or not

I used to buy multiples and be a completist. I have tons of open and unopened stuff. I have all the star wars from the orange card up till episode1 came out in closets that I couldn't sell for the life of me now.
Towards the tail end of the 25th, I started picking and choosing what I wanted. Now, with the ROC and onwards, I just but what I like and open it. I no longer have the funds nor see the point to buy stuff and throw it in a box. If it has really really cool packaging, I may still keep one closed, but I no longer collect for perceived value like I once did. I collect for fun now.
I really dig what I see coming for POC, but I probably will just open it all.

MOC/MISB, imo, is like AFA: TOMBS.
I can't afford to buy a Jaguar and just leave the keys in it with the doors locked and say, "great car."
I gotta take what i get out, fiddle with it, pose it and enjoy it.
I have only 5 figures in my room I never opened. 2 Rescue Heroes figs i got for getting my Medic's License, Angela and Terry Fitzgerald collector's club figures and a Vlad the Impaler from McFarlane.
reason they are unopened? The MacFarlane crap is toooo damn fragile to open and break.
the Rescue Heroes are my trophies for hard work and they are protected.
But my Joes, my TFs my other figs....I give em some play.
There will be a day when i will stop collecting, and focus on new things, but for now, I buy what i want and enjoy it.
Rest in Peace, Dad.

I hate it. I hate having to deal with all the packaging and then having to dispose of it, and take the extra gear and bag it, and put that and the file card away, etc.
I just like looking at my display when it's done. That's the satisfying part for me.
But yeah, I could never be an MOC guy for the most part. I understand the appeal of really rare figures MOC, and even AFA graded (I own one), but not the MOC guys who buy new stuff and keep it carded. To each their own though, it's all good!

I only keep (MOC) what i obsessed over in the 80's , only because lets say i lose a loose fig , at least i have a ton more to dig out ten ,maybe twenty years from now , kinda like reopening a vintage fig now adays , tell me that wouldnt be gratifying ?
Or having already explain to my son and sharing memories of joes from when i was young and playing war with him now , hell want a piece of history when he gets older .
I dont care to sell it to someone thats rich and just gonna toss it to his baby boy because its the flavor of the week ,
I want it for my own reasons and i want it in my family ! nuff said !
P.S. some of you may have seen my pics , and noticed i do graffiti , well in the graffiti world (i didnt realise this ) there is vintage paint collectors , who knew , its like a mechanic collecting old wrenches , right ?
Well any who this kid was watching me paint and asked what would i do with a can of jungle green , (its like saying a moc straight arm 1980's original joe) .I also thought he was hypothetically speaking ....so im like I dont know , use it !!!!!! so hes like id like to see that , hands me a can of paper wrapped jungle green , and i pop the top , shake it up and use it , simple as that , toss the can back at the kid and say " meh , the newer stuff is better thsi shits like water and it smells like mold ! " ...point of the story is , it may be worth more than gold to some , but only those who experience that era when it was out , no one now a days would ever feel the same about walking down a store aisle and get frantically happy for a split second because of that red white n blue logo with that very well orchestrated star in the middle of that ol' mighty GI*JOE=== logo !
I dont know about you all , but thats what takes me back 25 years , is that card board and being able to rip open a box with the logo , is better than sex ! just saying !

I open everything. Well.....almost. There may be some toys in the attic. I plan to keep them until they are either worthless or I'm dead whichever comes first.

All my new joe's are opened and played with. My vintage stuff that is loose are also enjoyed by my kids and myself. But all my vintage MOC/MISB, I will not open. I absolutely love looking at them on the card and the box. It's just what I like and how I collect. As far as something being worth something in the future...who really know's.
