Hi everyone,
As I have been collecting the 25th Anniversary stuff...pretty much what's sold in retail, I know I'm missing out on the TRU stuff. Pretty much I'm trying to stay within budget and not get into my old toy habits of spending over a thousand dollars on toys (I'm a retired toy hunter that has quit purchasing toys unless it's for my son and only came back for the GI Joe 25th line and collecting has been lengthened due the modern line...once you become a GI Joe collector, it's hard to quit). But with vehicles, dvd box sets, comic packs and let alone the multiple wave of singles coming out via retail... suffice to say, like most of you in 2008, have spent hundreds on just the retail stuff alone. But my questions for you, since I have pretty much prevented myself from walking into a TRU (to prevent myself from going toy buying crazy) are: 1. I want Grunt because I want to have at least everyone from the original vintage line (where's Zap btw?). But is my only chance of obtaining Grunt through the Senior Ranking collection or is he coming out on singles anytime soon? 2. Does TRU have special 20% off deals on GI Joe online like Hasbro Toy Shop has done? 3. For the TRU exclusives, which one is the must-have. Sure, I know all hardcore GI Joe fans will say buy them all but with so much spent this month alone on GI Joe recent releases, I'm not really wanting to spend another $200-$300. My wife will kill me! Note: I'm not an army builder, I'm just an old school GI Joe fan who has collected the line for 25 years but don't have everything but just want the figures that are important, that matter or worth owning. But also, trying to budget my GI Joe spending and really trying to limit my spending on GI Joe to less than $1,000 a year (so hard!!!!) and has a wife with the eyes of a hawk and a toddler son (who is like a mini-spy for her on my GI Joe purchases)....so, definitely welcoming input from long time GI Joe collectors but most of all those who are selective and also collectors on a budget.

Hi! I hear you. I'm a selective collector myself. I only collect Cobra figures and a couple of Joes I have fond memories of from childhood. Times are hard so practicality is essential.
Anyway, to answer your questions: 1. AFAIK, there will be no single carded Grunt. 2. I don't think so. Over here, they don't. 3. I am not really a hardcore fan. But here is the way I see it: TRU and Target come out with exclusives that aren't on the regular line. So if you need to collect every single figure in the 25th line, you'll have to get them. The downside is, you'll be stuck with some repaints of figures you already have. The upside, you can sell them here, where someone will eventually purchase them from you. I hope that helps...

I have skipped on a whole bunch of stuff from TRU.
The must things to have for me right now is the SRO W2 packs. Especially the one with Skyduster/Starduster (whatever his name is). I'm buying the pack just for him alone. The other packs don't hurt either. But as far as any other exclusive. I can live without.

i got the night watch pack and the snake eyes with red ninja pakcs from TRU, as well as the Crimson SRO pack. IMO those are pretty good. but i used to army builde so those came in handy. The rattler, and the first 3 target vehicles i thought were pretty good also.
I used to buy every thing in site that was joe related, but then one day i felt that pretty much everything i purchased except for the single cards was lame (with the exception of some comic packs and vehicles) so i got rid of it all. The point of my story is buy what you like, and not everything that says GIJOE. a day will come where you will wake up and say "man why did i buy all this junk" kinda like i did, then its a bitch to get rid of. Save yourself some cash and just get what you really like |

If you have to have the version of Grunt from Hasbro then this is the one to get. There won't be a single carded version as far as I know.
However, consider that some people prefer to customize their own version of grunt and end up with a superior looking figure. http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ake-grunt.html As for THE three packs from TRU, I would say it's up to you which packs you really connect with. Some people love the Starduster figure, while others like myself are excited to see a yellow diver because of the famous scene from the original cartoon mini series. I will say this, the Crimson Guard with Red Cobra Commander pack seems to be the rarest. I really like that TRU is offering fans exclusive army builder packs. I really support them with this, and picked up the Firefly vs. the green shirts as well as the Snake Eyes vs. the red ninjas. I like both of them even though I'm not much of an army builder. Just the single pack of each is enough for me, but I really like the packaging and that each figure in the pack had a fully set of accessories and was decent quality, and a good choice for an army builder pack. |

Watch for circulars in the paper or online for sales to make it worth your while. Sometimes they have buy 2 get 1 free kind of things for other lines, and I'm sure GI Joe will be the focus soon with the movie on the horizon. From what I've seen the exclusives are in no danger of selling out soon so you have time to wait for a sale that will benefit you. personally I HATE going in TRU, I always leave disappointed.
Grunt isn't that great of a figure, if you've held out this long I would either try to trade for one or wait to see if he gets released in a later wave. I am more excited about the wave 2 SRO packs myself. |

If you want Grunt, grab the Duke/Red Star pack, a spare comic pack hawk head, Snake-Eyes webgear and some brown paint. He'll look a lot more like Grunt than the official TRU version.
As for which TRU exclusives are must haves, unless you're an army builder, I'd say wait for the 2nd series of SRO packs (specifically, the Air set. The sea set has figures ready for customs IMO ) Thus far nothing that's been released only at TRU (Except for some of the 2nd series of SRO) either hasn't been released somewhere else of is much of anything to write home about (I'm looking at you Greenshirts ) |

I have to be budget conscious. I DO NOT LIKE the Grunt in the SRO pack, he looks stupid. None of the Wave 1 SRO packs interest me.
I'll be getting the Iron Grendier, Air and possibly the water SRO packs. 5-packs are cool. I have the Nightwatch and the Firefly/Trooper and will get the Snake-Eyes/Red Ninjas. I'm skipping the Crimson Guard cause I'm not a Crimson Guard fan. I may pick it up when have extra money just so can have a small troop of CGs for display. As for value, it's good bang for your buck. $25 bucks for a 5 pack, puts each figure at 5 dollars. Normal single carded figure is about $7 bucks. If they are figures you want, go for it. Budgetwise, I wish everything came as a 5-pack, 3-pack or comic pack.

Do you collect loose or MIP? If loose I would say grab a grunt, and Cutter off of ebay. The 5 packs arent really necessary.
