how many ppl have come to this dilema. im there right now, what to do?? one 1 hand i think i need to grow up, stop buying toys, get some bills paid and move on to more adult things.
the other hand, i love these things, will be sad if they go for a few days, and will feel im giving in to the adult society. with the line ending soon and the next 5 waves mostly repaints, i just feel its time to get out of this hobby, but wave 10 was excellent, and was like a kid in the candy store when they arrived, plus all the new vehicles coming out...........i just dont know right now where im at with these. has anyone sold off or thought about it in the past? id like your opinion.

Yes, might as well now devote your time to football (where you can be an acceptable geek in your logo hats and t-shirts, face and/or body paints, paying too much and/or traveling to annual events like the super bowl, and hang out with people of questionable hygene).
Or maybe you're just into sitcoms... or making that lawn the envy of your neighbors that you never talk to. Paying bills is good... but seriously, what is "grown up" exactly? |

i have no idea really, i hardly even see kids buying or playing with toys at all these days anyway. my 10 yr old daughter has an ipod, cell for emergencies, a ds, they want all high tech stuff, its the adults buying the toys now lol.
if anything, i might just stay with single carded figures. i love the vehicles, box sets suck, so who knows, and the comic packs are so/so. i may miss a few new figures by not buying the comic packs and sets, but man seeing mutt and junkyard carded again was a rush..............

If you're asking about the pros and cons... the biggest con will be regret.
I regret selling my ENTIRE GI Joe comic collection. Budget, compromise, but if you're waivering... don't sell, don't stop, just have fun. Life is too short to spend it miserable.

Unless there is some sort of emergency that you definitely need the money for right here and now, I don't see the need to sell off your collection to conform to what society considers an adult.
I collect action figures along with other stuff such as sports memorabilia. I guess you can put me in that other category of traveling around the country going to sporting events and such as well. Sure I love wearing my jerseys with all the logos and stuff, but I never have gone as far as the whole face or body painting thing goes. I see it this way, do what you love to do. Just be smart and safe about it because any hobby can become an addicting habit just as drugs and alcohol can. Make sure you take care of all of your responsibilities before you buy anything else. You may also want to give up something else in your life to make up for your toy buying. Lets say you are a smoker. Give up that habit and put the money to your collection. At least you can sell you collection one day and get back what you put in, or even make a profit. You can't sell your used butts or dirty old cancer ridden lungs. I say the same thing to my dad when he complains about my collection being a waste of money. He is a dirty rotten gambler. I ask him to show me what can he get in return for all of his losings. Then I show him what things are going for on Ebay and he says it's bullshit and that no one is paying those prices. Old people just don't get the internet...LOL! I just can't stand when people judge us for our collections. My ex girlfriend gave me crap about it all the time. She would always ask me when I was going to grow up. If it wasn't the toys it was the way I dressed. I would wear sports jerseys all the time. She said since I looked like a kid people would perceive me as one. I really don't care what people think. I feel like this, if you can't like me for me and everything that comes with me then you shouldn't be with me. I'm very happy to have gotten out of that bad relationship. I shouldn't have to give up my personality for anyone if it really isn't causing a problem other than someone not liking it. As for now I'm trying to be smart about what I decide to purchase. I'm no longer buying 2 of everything. I used to buy 1 to open and 1 to keep sealed. That habit stopped with the Star Wars POTF2 line. I have way too many of those and I regret ever getting them. I would have liked to do that for all the Joes as well but I didn't want to run into the same problem later on down the line. I look at it this way, I don't smoke, drink or gamble so that puts me ahead of the game with extra money left over for the week that could have gone to those vices of life. I figure why not spend that "extra" cash on something that makes me happy and wont kill me in the process. Just think about what is worth more to you sometimes. Would you rather go out to the movies Friday night, or purchase that new comic pack? Would you rather go out to the bar Saturday night and spend $10 for the cover charge to get in and then $5 a beer after that, or instead buy a few Joes or vehicles because you know you are not leaving that bar with a tab less than $50? If you do decide to part with your collection make sure you find something else in life that fills that void of the happiness your collection brought you, because if you don't you might always be looking back on what you did with regret.

I was in this same situation. Growing up I had the old joes and liked them but missed out on alot of the cool stuff because of money and my families situation, as I got money as a kid I collected the complete old GI JOE comic book collection. People told me it was pointless but I really had fun doing it. When the 25th line came out I saw the dragon ss and couldn't resist from that point it was downhill I started buying most everything single packed or in the joe/cobra boxes. But like you it got to be too much. I keep staring at the boxed tf flint, python officer, baroness etc... and wondering if that $ wouldn't be better spent somewhere else. My guess is if it makes you happy do it. As stated by other posters its not bad for your health unless it becomes an addiction.
Good luck with your decision. |
