This thread is a place to discuss possible ways to help save the "Timeless" GI Joe brand.
We should try to keep our eyes on the future with ideas for where can Hasbro go from here, but it may be necessary to point out mistakes that have happened in the past so as to prevent them or similar mistakes from happening again. In my opinion this is a difficult place to be right now: post Renegades, pre Retaliation. What would you do?

Good to get this topic out there again, I just didn't want to retype all my thoughts. Post Renegades/Pre-Retaliation is not a difficult place to be. The line is already dictated on what it should be: Retaliation. To be honest, Renegades should not have happened. Hasbro should have bit the bullet and done what they originally had planned, which was the original PoC. RoC evolved into PoC which was supposed to carry the brand until Retaliation. Didn't happen. Renegades just added another version that ultimately didn't add anything. Renegades was in a bad spot, unless it did incredibe in the ratings, it was always going to get pushed aside for the 2nd movie.

Hasbro lacks any clear vision for what the franchise is or it what it may become. They are looking to others to tell them what it should be. This is clear in their all over the place marketing, product lines, storylines, cartoon, comics entities. Their strategy is a lack of strategy. Throw everything at the wall, design by commitee, focus group think, corporate mindset. What they need is a focused vision that all the disparate can rally behind. As pixar would say, "story, story, its the story". Everything must support the story. Hard to do when no one knows which story.

I guess I don't see what the big deal is. You can see the POC influence on the Retaliation figures. It appears, to me, like it's a natural progression. And I was unaware that GI Joe needed saving.

I've never seen anything sell out as fast as the updated Classics like Lowlight, SS, Airtight, SciFi, Law and Order, Lifeline and even the Zombie viper...not sure if they were produced in lower numbers, but they pretty much sold out everywhere in like a week or so...
I know that collectors arent the target market, but any 30 year old guy that had joes when he was a kid would buy an amazingly well updated fig if they saw one in stores. Didnt even know about 25th until I walked in a toy store and saw Major Bludd back in 2008...4 years later...here I am... So even if people arent ''collectors'' I know that Updated ARAH sells. Even if its just the dude that has 2 or 3 figs on his desk. Imagine if there thousands of people who collect, how many regular dudes with one or two awesome new figs on their desks there is. I know toys are for kids, but kids would like any action figure, if its a shitty Retaliation Driver type, or a fully articulated killer fig. The kid that wont like toys cause he plays with video games wont want either. A kid who does plays with action figure is most likely to want the awesome figure thats fully poseable than the grummy non articulated toy. Even ARAH Joes had more articulation...

They are trying to constantly reinvent the wheel. The line was successful in the 80s up until they started doing weird stuff (I saw the 94 stuff in Bellamo's booK and it was horrendous). But then again, the world has changed. I know that electronics have taken over, and the American name doesn't mean what it used to. I think the best thing for Joe right now is Retaliation. It seems like it's picking up steam, and Dwayne has really helped that. Also helps to have Bruce Willis. The trailer looks great. I think the figures look good so far (I'm reserving all judgment until I have the figs in hand, so I'm not gonna flip out about articulation). Hasbro just needs to blow it out of the water with the toys now. They need to be visible, they need to be perfect, they need to be the best "movie" toys a kid has ever gotten. They need to be affordable, and they need to be stocked correctly. I think this could draw people back in if the ball isn't dropped.

Right now the brand doesn't need saving. There's a big tent pole movie coming and a new line based around that movie.
Let's wait and see how the movie does. It could generate a ton of interest in the toys and we could have an 80s-like increase in Joe sales.
