LMAO! Yeah, it just means that they're trying to clear out the LARGE surplus of movie figures from the warehouse before the next movie.

I don't know if specifically the Transformers movie toys sold well, because I can't really tell the difference when it comes to Transformers. All that junk looks the same. Afterall, car that turns into a robot is a still car that turns into a robot, movie or not.
That said, having a HUGE hit movie helps sell figures, no doubt. I suspect ALL the GI Joe figures will sell well and suddenly the guys that are clogging pegs now will be picked up. Movie line or not. But the movie line could ultimately stiffle the 25th line and I don't think anyone can deny that fact. Movie lines tend to be BIG booms and then die off in a month or two. Iron Man is a great example. Those figures were super hot when that movie hit, but now they're slow selling. I think the movie will benefit us in the long run, so long as Hasbro is wise and doesn't overflood the market with the name GI Joe. |

The movie figures, the animated figures and the classics figures. The first few cases of the new Joes sell , then everything just sits here. Star Wars stuff is the same way, there are still many of the first day issue figures with dust on them in all the stores around here. But Transformers sell.

Yeah, they all look nearly identical. Thankfully, we don't have that problem here in G.I. Joeland. Troop Builders anyone?

for anyone not familiar with the concept of cannibalization in the marketplace, here's a pretty good breakdown: What is cannibalization? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: cannibalize, cannibalizing that's why Hasbro doesn't want multiple Joe lines in the marketplace at once, and are going to release everything under the movie banner. unfortunately, unlike Transformers, which has proven to be successful for years with multiple lines, Hasbro is just a bit precautious, and justifiably so, with G.I. Joe, which has had a rough time reclaiming its foothold in the market and its strength to maintain multiple lines is unknown. the 4" and 12" figures, though, aren't really competing with each other, that is why Hasbro feels comfortable with having them on the shelf at once, as opposed to two different 4" lines. I eagerly await the "know it all" insults for presenting information that others may not be aware of, and will apologize in advance for my arrogance in assuming it might be something people who want to discuss the dynamics behind the lines might want to know about. |

I will see the movie. I may hate it, or I may not. Have to wait and see.
If the figures look cool, I will collect them, especially the troop builders and vehicles. But I haven't seen anything yet, so I don't have an opinon yet.

Here are my thoughts about this whole thing.
I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know if it will be good or bad. The figures for the movie line will be the same construction as the 25th figures, so I will probably be buying some, if only for customs fodder. Hasbro has already said that the characters will be wearing several different suits during the movie, so it should be fun to get figures in arctic gear, jungle gear, etc. As for the performance of the movie line, I hope sales explode! If, as several people seem to be wishing for, it flops, I'm afraid that we might not see a follow-up ''Classics'' line in 2010. If the line doesn't move and has to be deeply discounted to sell, retailers will be very reluctant to stock their shelves with anything Joe afterward, at least for a while. An example is Spider-Man 3 toys. They are still everywhere. Hasbro didn't sell as many as they wanted or they overproduced, but whatever the reason, they are still pegwarming after a year. When Hasbro approched retailers with their Iron Man and Hulk lines, the response was lukewarm at best. Iron Man toys ended up selling (I have no info on Hulk items), but it took some convincing on Hasbro's part to convince retailers to support these lines after the Spider-Man 3 flop. As for keeping two parallel lines going at once, I don't think there is a large enough market for GI Joe to warrant that kind of shelf space commitment from retailers. I also don't believe Hasbro would want to dilute their product offering that way. Transformers and Star Wars can do it, but I think they are the exception. They have much larger and broader fan bases. On an optimistic note, if the Joe movie line does well and brings in a new generation of kids, I think we can look forward to a very bright future for Joe. I know I'll be rooting for the movie line! I have to say gun that i like your post and i do agree with you. Transformers sold like hot cakes and i know from working at a super target. We were putting cases and cases out during the movie time and the kids ate them up( Bumblebee being the hot one). There is no doubt that gi joe has a lot to prove to retailers before they become a mainstay. I truly hope the movie does well and the figures even better because that is what we need as joe fans if we want to see this line continue on strong. I've said it before and i'll say it again i have alot of faith that the figures should be pretty damn cool and the vehicles could be as well. The same team is working on these i believe and they have done a great job thus far.
