Howdy folks. Its come to that point where I need to catalog my collection and then start cutting it back a little. I am sure there are some tankers here with spreadsheets and databases galore.
Do you have a preference between database and spreadsheet? I basically need to catalog everything made for the past 12 years so if anyone has a database or spreadsheet covering that span it would be much appreciated! If not, any suggestions as to what categories/columns to have? Do you have a separate one for figures and another for vehicles? What about years? Any input or help is appreciated. Thanks tankers! |

After toying around a bit with creating a database in access 2003, I figured I would buy a database because creating one is incredible time consuming. I bought the KBT collectors database. I learned by data entry that there were a few nice things about it, but it wasn't anywhere near my expectations and not as customizable as I had hoped for. It ended up being useless to me.
I resumed the access database creation further. I get stuck at building the Relational Model every time. I'm not sure if I create the correct table groups which makes it harder to create the relations. It is most definably one of the most difficult parts of the creation for me. If I could get help with it, I'm sure it would become a great action figure collector database! To not waste more time on creation and to start right away with data entry, I've made an Excel Spreadsheet. With all the categories that I came up with from the access database brainstorming which had lots of trials and errors over a period of a year, it was easy to setup the excel structure. I've been working on the entries for a few months now. I have the unique numbers linked to a picture of the item and it's a pain to click it each time I want to know what the item looks like. I really wish it could have small thumbnails that wouldn't mess with the structure integrity too much. It would be perfect to have like access, easy to access graphic interface searchable records with small pictures. It would be so awesome to find an existing ready for data entry action figure database but I couldn't seem to find any that comes anywhere near my expectations of my categories. To me the expectations are not too high because I see them all as necessary for all of the dozens of different toylines I collect. Last edited by synthalus; 01-22-2012 at 02:05 PM.. |

I use Excel for mine. I have tabs for my Joe roster, Cobra roster, wants list, sub teams, vehicles, and a checklist of my Troop building to complete.

There is a website I believe that has a database for collectors... I think it is Collector Action Figures or something thereabouts... I believe you create a log-in, select an item from the list and then select how many of said item you have... There may even be an option for MOC/MIB/MIP or a "notes" section on the items...

I know about DASH. It also lacks a few categories which are necessary to me. I also don't like how the pictures you upload get their watermarks which kinda get in the way.
My internet connection is not always reliable. I prefer to have a database that's offline which is always accessible no matter what |

I had an acces data base for years and switch to excel, Excel is much easier to edit (say you come up with a new catagory you want to use, it's a simple point and click to move everything over). also you can catagorize as much as you like and change it at will without having to change the entire database (for instance I have all my avengers together with my X-Men right above).
I just find it much simplier than the clunky databse programs really, and counting is a piece of cake (just highlight the row and the total is in the corner of the page). |
