I think including certain figures (especially figures that don't have a confirmed existence like the protos) makes the listing of versions a bit off. As does exclusives (especially the SDCC figures and their variants). I feel a more accurate analysis would be to view only the MASS RETAIL offerings (stuff anybody with access to any store can get) up to what we know is coming (in this case, wave 12 single figures, wave 6 comic packs, and wave 3 vehicles).
When view under those criteria (I counted 5 packs and their single recards as two different releases):
Snake Eyes: 10 releases
Storm Shadow: 9 releases
Duke: 7 releases
Cobra Commander: 10 releases
So, in the mass retail setting, 42 figures were accounted for as "cores" of the line (this not counting characters like Roadblock, Flint, Lady Jaye, Beachhead, Wild Bill, Zartan, Major Bludd, Serpentor or several others than have had 2-3+ versions made or on the way).
Since the line launched, Hasbro has produced over 148 mass retail figures (not counting variants, recards or exclusives). All said and done, the "overused characters" account for only 30% of the total Joe figures released to mass retail, which is about par for an ensemble line like this (Star Wars, last I crunched the numbers, ran about the same percentage for its core characters like Obiwan, Vader, Luke and so on. The big difference is Star Wars has a larger pool of core characters to pull from).
BUT, I think it is important to note that when you consider exclusives, Hasbro has done (in some form, whether fans like the version or not) or in the process of doing, well over 75% of the characters from 1982-1986. In the short time this line has been out, Hasbro covered an impressive array of characters and years, and by the time the movie hits next year, the 25th/Modern line will account for well over 250 action figures in a span of only two years.
Not bad for a line that was barely a blip on the radar 18 months ago.

I truely thought that Hasbro had learned from SIGMA SIX. Yes the cartoon was bad, but the figures had a chance to stand o their own. While it wasn't the only promblem the amount of DUKES and SEs highly contributed to putting the line on standby.
THIS also doesn't take into account the times let's say the Gung Ho head was used poorly and the fact they tried to say Grand Slam was a silver Flash (basically).
I do understand that these popular characters will have to have some rereleases....but the Duke in the SR. OFFICERS 3 PACKS where he is wearing lime green...was that nessecary?
I guess what is most dishearting to me is... there are so manyfan favorites (flint, Shipwreck, ect...) couldn't we spilt the love? Instead of 8 Dukes, make 2 Hawks 2 Flints, 2 Shipwrecks, ect...
Repaints are life. We can't change that. But atleast mix it up.

This is a very cool & comprehensive list just some minor nitpicks on the descriptions...
DVD Pack –Pyramid of Darkness ('85 version 2 new mold)
Ultimate Battle Pack – (Repaint of v2 I.G. -cape)
Wave 12 (Omega Force) (Battle Armor repaint) (v3)
*This repaint is more likely a comic pack figure & not "Resolute/Omega Force"
And yes I have had quite enough of the Commander myself... & with more on the way he has kicked the Snake Eyes repaints to the ground.
Thanks again for doing the math. It's shocking. @_@
