Does getting figures graded and sealed in plastic for all eternity really matter? I mean I dont know much about it cause not really about the whole grading thing but who certified these groups to grade the figures anyways? Who made them god of figures to say whats a 10 when I can look at something too and say look this corner is not bent so its minty fresh! Not to be a jerk but those that have had things graded dont chime in cause of course you agree with it. You wasted the money to have it done ;-)

Any of us could start an AFA type business. They just thought of it first & idiots bought into it. Just like if you want to start your own religion you'll always be able to find retards that will follow you.

I started the Headman grading association but no one has been brave enough to send me their stuff yet.

Honestly I am with you 100% about the AFA grading thing. I do think it is worth getting some things graded but not everything. I have tons of vintage carded figures that are both graded and ungraded. I have never personally sent any figures in for grading but I am thinking about biting the bullet and sending in several of my high end figures in for grading and maybe flip a few of them on ebay to make up for the fee's. Anyways I do know where you are coming from though. I mean seriously I can look at a carded figure and tell if it's been opened or tampered with. I can tell if it's in nice condition or not. I gotta hand it to AFA for the acrylic cases they are really a nice way of displaying your figures. I do feel that their service is a bit steep. I feel the price on carded figures is a bit over priced and the loose figures as well. I can tell you that in the past I wish I would have sent stuff in for grading because I sold it ungraded and the guy got them graded and sold the few figures I sold him for several thousand each. I think the 1 guy he sold which was an Exploosion 20 bk Cobra officer it was an AFA 80 w/80/85/85 subs if I remember correctly he sold it for like $1700. Also sold the same guy an Explosion 20 bk Flash and it scored AFA 85 w/all 85 subs and he sold that for like $2500 and I sold him a 32 back mutt which AFA'd at an 85 which he sold for $750. Anyways I sold them all to the guy for like $2000 and he made a killing off that. So it can be worth sending figures in for grading but not always. I have a Crystal ball AFA 85 that I can't even sell for $109 on ebay. I also have an AFA 85 Red Star ad Sci-Fi v2 both MOC AFA 85 triple 85's and I can't hardly give them away on ebay. I'm only asking $58 each for them + shipping and no bites. Been offered like $40 for each of them. They are worth at least 50 to $60 each right? Anyways take it for what it is and do research on ebay at closed auctions and you will find that typically graded figrues sell for considerably more. Especially if they are graded AFA 85 or better. Figures graded AFA 80 typically sell for about 50% of their AFA 85 counterparts. AFA 75 figures sell for about 30 to 40% of their 85 counterparts and anythign lower than that usually isn't worth it unless it's something extremely rare. Anyways hope this helps you a bit.a

I collect mostly carded and boxed toys and consider the AFA a scam. Aside from exhorbitant eBay auctions and comic/toy show setups, I have yet to see market support for anything but the most rare examples.

I kind of get AFA grading. It's a standard by which to measure the quality of an item. Still seems ridiculous overall, though. And terribly expensive.

The only plus I can see about AFA is the nice protective case your toy gets put into. Everything else is a waste in my eyes. Especially when you see things like:
1. People get an item graded, then send it back and the same item gets a better grade 2. Loose items are graded complete even though they use accessory pack accessories 3. Vintage Joes will not stay at the grade they are given, those O-Rings will deteriorate over time |
