I remember the long row of Joes and Transformers at TRU. I also used to get Joes at Woolworth and Toy Box. Toy Box was a mall based toy store, before Kay Be came along. I even rememeber calling the diffrent Toy Box stores looking for new items way back when. LOL.

We had a Big K (not Kmart) before Wal-Mart bought them out, and they always had a lot of Joes. Also had a TG&Y thats where I got my Whale from. Super X drug store had a good selection too. When we went to the big city of Montgomery it was TRU, Toby's Toys, Sears, and Service Merchandise. I remember seeing a Joe scale Blue Thunder helicopter at SM, but couldn't talk my dad into it that day.

Service Merchandise now that's a name I've not heard for a long time. That's were I got my Lion and Vehicle Voltron's back in the day for 50 bucks a piece (all my allowance for months back then).

Wow, this thread really brings backs memories of a lot of retail stores. What happened to America?
We always read that certain chains would win out in a free-market run rampant. We were warned of the homogenization of America regarding national chains. We were told that we'd lose out on regional businesses. And, here we are. Twenty years later and we have K-mart, Toys R Us, Walmart, and Target. And two of those probably won't last another 5 years. That's sad. Gaelinic

Wow! When I was younger, Lionel Playworld was called Kiddie City around here (it was in East Hanover, NJ). The commercial was the same, but with the different name.
I think they went out around here in the early to mid nineties. I got most of my Joes at TRU, but I remember getting Quick Kick at a Hardware store (I think True Value). |
