This is an interesting thread...
I remember buying Joes specifically at K-Mart, & The Fair (a defunct dept. chain), that had soooo many Crystal Ball's warming their pegs... TRU & a local competitor called "Tons of Toys", I still remember where I bought alot & where... I remember Tons Of Toys had a section equal to TRU's, it was a real Toy Dept Store like TRU, they had only Toys, but they were a little more expensive, but I remember you could find the OLD stuff there, like I bought Zarana (good head) & the Serpentor Air Chariot set there long after they had disappeared off shelves, & other classics like in '89 when they where '85-86 Joes. I also bought a lot of figs from a friend with a HUGE collection who was growing outta toys, that's how I got a lotta '83-84's...he would sell anything but original Firefly & StormShadow lol ...he kept trying to sell me or even GIVE me his Flagg Aircraft Carrier, but the thing was just SO BIG, I didn't know where I could put it in my house at age 12. Now I really wish I would have found a way, but I just couldn't see it at that age....just 2 angry parents lol!! I bought figs from CVS with my grandma...they were the only place that still had Lady Jaye. But most of my "bought" figs where from those 4 stores, TRU, Tons Of Toys, K-mart, The Fair, & maybe even Child World. I know my Terror Drome was an X-mas present from TRU!! I also remember getting the Stealth Fighter Phantom X-19 at TRU too...that thing was HAWT!! Good Times...good times... Last edited by Steel Brigade; 08-21-2008 at 10:31 PM.. |

That's funny, I was just talking about this with Slowrey last week. I went to Bradlee's and Zayers mostly, sometime Kay Bees as well. I can remember getting them at now-defunct drugstores and a supermarket chain, and also a small department store in the town I went to college. We also had other local chain stores like JJ Newberry's and Wilsons that carried lots of Joes and Transformers back in the day.

Anyone remember Venture it was a big retail store in the 80's like Target but their colors were black and white. That's were I got my 1st Joe toy Vamp w/Clutch. That was St. Louis when I moved to TN in the 80's TG&Y was always the hook up and Montgomery Wards.

Hills and Children's Palace helped me collect almost the entire 82-89 line and my Grandfather was the VP of Hooks Drug Stores and I would get TMNT and He-Man there. I miss the days when toys were made for fun but now its all profit and that makes me a little bit sad.

Where do you find GI Joes? Or, where did you used to find them? I was just remembering all the places I bought toys at. I remember a Zayres in Chicago and Lionel Playworld in Miami.
Did anyone outside of Florida have Lionel Playworld? I remember going almost every Saturday with my dad to Toys R Us and Playworld. I still remember the theme song: "When you're searching for something for your little girls or boys, and you're finding high prices but not finding toys, and you're sad and you're blue and you're tired of running 'round . . . Let Lionel Playworld turn that frown upside down." Man, I can still hear that song with the Kangaroo and kid mascots. Oooh, I love youtube: Enjoy this commercial and freeze it at the 13 second mark . . . Enjoy.
