Good story. I think we all have moments like that from time to time.
The funny part was, as I was reading your story I was thinking "I could have been that other guy with the armload of stuff" :-)
I have been collecting action figures for over 10 years, but my collection is rimarily Marvel, DC, and Star Wars. I have been looking at the 25th Anniversary stuff since they came out, but I only picked up the Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow.
The DVD packs were what finally pushed me over the edge. I remeber watching all of these with my brother when we were kids. Broght me right back to those days...
So I have spent the last 2 weeks running all over town trying to pick up whatever I could find to get caught up. just bought the MASS Device Cobra Commander the other day ;-)
Anyway, I can definitely relate. However, if I could share my experience (in case I haven't rambled on long enough...), when my wife was in vet school, we lived in this really small town in East Texas. At the time, I was collecting Marvel Legends, Star Wars & LOTR. There was 1 Target, 1 TRU, and 2 WM's in town, so not a lot of choices. I kept seeing the same guy at TRU on Wednesdays, and my initial reaction was much like yours.
However, after 3-4 weeks of this, I decided to strike up a conversation with the guy. Turns out we had a lot of the same interests, and we started helping each other out on toy runs. We are still good friends today, 5 years later, even though I now live 3 hours away. Probably my best friend in the collecting community.
Anyway, now when I see a guy in the aisle, or out in front of the TRU waiting for it to open (like you have never done that...), I always try to strike up a conversation.
BTW, I also like the avatar a lot.

Been there, done that..........:(
Best I can tell you is I have found consistancy (while a pain in the arse) can be your friend. I hit the same stores pretty much at least once or twice a week once I know something new is soon to hit. Sometimes I'll go a little out of my area (like for Target specials and what not), but other than that it's pretty much the same ones.
It always seems to pay off eventually one way or another, I am currently now finding BATs pretty consistantly, but nothing I would bet on, after months of nothing.
I will NOT jump the gun on the next wave and buy them at high fees with others or e-bay this time. Instead I plan on using my method to find the hard ones in the next wave - Eels. (they are going to be a b*tch :( ).
"Oh dear" said Pooh, as he punched the magazine release...

The other day I showed up at a Walmart and low and behold they actually had a BAT....and one CC w/ Mass element and only 2 comic packs. How could this be. A lone BAT amongst the sparse peg-warmers? I wasted no time in snatching that BAT up since I didn't have one yet and hadn't ever seen one. Just as I was scanning the area for any more BAT's or Snow serpents that may've fallen amongst the crappy Wrestling figs, a 20-something, heavyset, guy kinda stumbles into the isle and stops short when he see's me standing in front of the Joes with the BAT in my hand. He awkwardly mills around the Star-Wars and Indiana Jones toys, trying to look interested, but all the while he keeps glancing up at me with a look of desperation, hoping against all hope that I put his beloved BAT down. I almost felt sorry for him. As a comic artist, I go to alot of comic book conventions and see his kind all the time. A mid-20's, over 300lbs, extremely nerdy fanboy. He fit the bill to a T. But...I almost felt sorry for him.
Now my Best friend since 5th grade (Interest in GI JOE actually brought us together) has the best story though. One day he stopped by a Target with his son to see if they had any new joes in. As they entered the store, his son started whining about being hungry so my friend decided to stop for a hot dog in the food area. As they were sitting and eating, In walks a guy wearing a Cobra logo T-shirt. It was obvious what this guy was there for because he had the Joe-hunter power-walk goin on and he was advertising his intentions on his shirt. My buddy rounded up his kid and tried to hurry to the joes before this cobra operative could poach HIS claim but, having kid in tow proved to be my buddies downfall. As they rounded the corner of the isle, there was the cobra-guy, with an armload of figures. Figures that should have been my friends. My friend wasn't really mad though because the situation was just too funny. He quicky got on the cell to tell me how he was defeated by a Cobra.
All-in-all, we should all be pals in this. I think it's the in-store-scalpers, and ebay-profiteers that have made us turn against each other. Who do you trust? Those parasites are feeding off our fandom and it causes "THE UGLY" to come out in all of us....that and the weak distribution by Hasbro. My friend and I have been collecting together since we were kids and today when we see new product, we call each other in store to inform each other of whats out and if theres a particular item the other needs, we'll pick it up for each other or get it for the other for Christmas or birthdays. We should all have that kinda camaraderie!
