If you're a collector of any sort everyone knows that if you snooze you lose. I can't tell you how many times I've run around town looking for stuff only to come up empty handed. It's frustrating to say the least. Whenever I've decided I've had enough and decide to give the hunt a few days rest is when the stores stock the shlelf. More frustrating then the hunt is walking into a store and finding remnants of the wave you were just looking for (or in other words: the pegwarmers).....you know they were there, but you just missed them.
I'm far from giving up collecting, but It's starting to wear me out. I'm wondering is this even worth it anymore? I know I can pre-order or trade here (which I do) but I like the satisfaction of finding what I want when I want it. I'm not gonna rant about why don't the stores stock more Joe's....we've all covered that to death and have a million different reasons. My dilemma is just what am I going to do with this stuff. When it's all said and done and I've decided I have more then I can possibly display, play with, keep in package or give to my kids.....then what? I'm having fun collecting everything (including Star Wars, DC and Marvel) and I have a whole room (well a work shop in my basement that is half toys and half tools) devoted as a tribute to my youth and iconic characters I grew up with. I love it and enjoy just looking at my stuff.....but still the question remains....what now? and will it ever be enough? Will I be addicted to this stuff until it either drains my bank account or I drop dead? I can only hand so much down to my kids (and in all seriousness I have my doubts if my kids will even care about figures like Thor, Ben Kenobi and Green Arrow.....I mean, that's special to me not them) I guess I'm just trying to say is I feel a bit of burn out on the whole toy collecting thing. It's not an easy solution like "just stop collecting". Anyone here will tell you when you're hooked you can't just walk away saying I don't care or want this stuff anymore. What started out 10 years ago as buying a few Star Wars figures to display on my entertainment center (damn you George Lucas) has turned into a full blown addiction. Who else has questioned "why do i do this?" I'm interested to hear everyone's reasoning...... |

Heck, I live for the hunt, but wow I really wanna give up when I don't find anything. But I always keep int he back of my mind the thought that "Something will come about", and that's why I have the Tank. And yes, I am running out of room.

Well i live in an area with 4 Walmarts 2 Targets and 1 TRU AND one worthless K-mart If you want a buzzer or serpentor they got em. Me and my buddy collect the same thing Transformers and Joes...It's gotten to be a big PITA to do both. Finding New joes is like finding porn stars knocking on your door. Ive got Two Military bases to compete with. Soldiers collect the piss out of joes! So im sorry to say ive given up...Just keeping it to the TF's...and christ finding an Onslaught from the new Universe (Classics) series is almost like finding bats and snow serpents...I want to pull out my hair! So all that hub bub to just say...yes im with you..im burnt out!! So im trading off what i have for tf's i dont have lol.

I got burned out once back in 2003. I was collecting heavily, Star wars (all figures, LEGO, and 12"), 12" Military (21st, Dragon, BBi) as well as Joes.
I got to the point I was worn out from looking, buying, etc. I had a HUGE Imperial army. I figured if I can sell it, I'm done. I got over $2000 for the Imperials alone. The rest was just dumped onto ebay. By the time we moved into our first house, I had ZERO toys left. I was toy free! Until I preordered my Battlefront game and got the free Biker Scout figure. Sadly, I was hooked again. |

I feel the exact same way. The only way I do it now is if I have something else to get at the store so if there is nothing it is not a wasted trip. I do my grocery shopping when the stores typically get inventory. That way I don't waste the gas.
I tell myself also that it will be there in droves at some point. I remember looking everywhere for wave 3 comics for weeks. Now they are stuffed on pegs for months. I have taken the "I have to have it first" mentality out of the equation. Madden 2009 and my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers starting up is a good diversion as well |

There are days but like you said, if you snooze you loose.

I have cut back a little bit. On my way home from work, I stop by, in this order: K-Mart -- TRU -- Target -- Walmart (and I go to Sears in between Target and WM on Mondays). Believe it or not, they are all on my way home, so I'm not really going out of the way, but it takes a good hour to get home after I leave work for a trip that should take 15-20 minutes. I've pretty much quit doing that for now, because I'm good with what I want. I limit myself -- I don't do complete waves, or usually variations. I look for 2 or 3 figures from each wave that I like (sometimes just 1) and I have found the vehicles I want. I'll probably start up the rounds again when the next wave comes out. Right now, I'm just checking TRU and Target because I want the Firefly set and I want the Rattler. So this sort of keeps me from being burnt out. But it is really frustrating when day after day you come up empty handed.

I actually have no where to put or display anything, and I may have to move in January overseas which means this stuff has to go in storage somewhere for 2-3 years. I suppose I could take a few things with me but what to choose? To top it off I'm still buying everything new. I've preordered everything since I don't even want to try looking anymore. My only hope is the movie stuff is so unappealing to me that I can just walk away from the habit. But It may be even better!

One of the things that bothers me is, when you get to a store, you get that feeling of hope that you find something good, you walk all the way to the back of the store only to find the same thing that was there the last time you were there.
That long walk back to the car is droll. Then after the 2nd store, the next store you go to, you sit in the car a minute and debate whether or not you should make that long walk to find nothing. Then you have to live with the feeling that you MAY be missing something and make the walk anyways, only to find nothing. |
