I just get burned that it seems that people have all the time in the world to hunt except for me...

I despise "the hunt". I want to buy and own toys, not hunt and gather them. The difficulty in finding the current line has brought me to the edge of dropping it altogether several times, at several levels.
First, I dropped my "two of each" policy to have each figure loose and MOC, because finding cards in nice shape was getting harder and harder, and because MOC figures were getting good money at auction.
Then, I stopped army building, even to the small degree I was doing it, because the figures went to $7 each, and there was word they'd go higher. One of each figure gives me the examples I need. Until...
I got completely shut out of the blue Cobra Commander. I had seeral friends going to the SDCC, at least 2 were trying to specifically grab me one of the blue CC's. BOTH got one, and BOTH (including one guy who was AT MY WEDDING) decided to keep theirs to sell on ebay. I could not get one from HTS due to the site issues at the time. As for ebay, I REFUSE to pay more than retail for a modern production figure. So i missed out on a hard to find figure...Which, when you're a "one of each" completist, pretty much kills the whole reason for collecting the line.
Right now, I'm buying the figures IF I find them, and I'm not going out of my way anymore to find them. I've wasted too much gas and time already. I'll put effort into finding vehciles, especially firebats, but nothing else. I haven't seen the current comic pack wave, and as far as the fabled "current wave", i've only seen a BAT once in my area, on a card that looked like it was run over by a truck, and a Snow Serpent 3 times.
On the vintage side, I've avoided burnout by reminding myself, there will ALWAYS be something cool to buy. Whether it is army builders, or a nice vehicle with a mint box, or a random AFA item, or some wild non-toy item like bubble bath or a halloween costume sewing pattern, or a one of a kind protoype or piece of art by a vintage line designer or artist, there will ALWAYS BE SOMETHING COOL TO BUY. I REPEAT, THERE WILL....ALWAYS... BE SOMETHING COOL TO BUY. If you miss out on something cool today, you'll find something else cool in an hour or a day or a week or whatever. Just be patient. Eventually, I have no doubt I'll get a blue SDCC CC for the $11 retail again. I'll just have to wait and be patient.

The only reason I'm not burnt out at the moment is because Wave 10 isn't out yet. Luckily I got caught up about a week & a half ago, so it's been nice driving by Walmarts/Targets/TRU's without thinking of stopping by just to see what they have!

man i have it now with buying toys and customs as they are tied together for me. what kills me is and has discouraged me is the fing sclupers . they kill it for me as they go for the hot stuff and leaves the crap for us and i feel bad for the kids you want that certain fig and cant buy it as they only can go to the store when there mom or dad take them later in the day.

Dude, I got the same kinds of issues. I am 33 and have been collecting pretty much only Joe since 1983.
I have stopped in the past only to find myself catching up when I lost out on some figures.
There is something to say about addiction with collecting.
There is a obsessive composiveness about this "hobby."
I have an retired doctor that eats at my restaurant and he says "there is therapy and medication" for my issues and I am sure there is treatment for this collecting business as well.
Truth is, all this stuff ends up in plastic boxes in my basement rarely to see the light of day again. I collect it because I enjoy the fantasy and I like to see my favorite figures brought to life again in pretty descent scupts.
You have to make the decision to make a decision and not look back.
Once I have my vac-chrome Glenda, I can walk away. Until then,

Well we have dedicated our entire house to collections of this that and much much more. I think Star Wars has done us a big favor by going 'cartoony' on half their line...we wont buy it...(Hear me hasbro WONT) I think that a collection needs to be groomed from time to time, my mate doesnt think so but oh well. In Gi Joe, we have been trying to pick up the best of the figures and vehicles across the 80's lines and the early 90s. Anything that resembles the original 3 3/4 inch figure design. Those newer 2000-2004 figures we stay away from mostly...the 'rubber figures'. But as with any collection when something superior comes along, you have to get rid of the inferior. This is what I have done with Star Wars. Darth Vader (You hear me hasbro, stop making Darth Vader...I'm not buying another one.) They did the best vader in 2004 and I just read that Vader is their number one priority over ALL others if a repaint or redeco or redo is warranted. Same with Cobra Commander. I dont need a neon one or a neon duke. Hasbro went all funky colors in the 90's then the quality dropped. I have no nostalgia for those figures that just dont have the quality of the 1980's wave. But now the 25th ones are awesome, I am still amazed at how much recycling of molds is happening, but I still like them and hope that they don't loose quality or make boring figures with flashy colors.
In Summary (for those I haven't lost yet) The Original Vintage Joes are here to stay in my collection and they will complement the 25th figures nicely. We just will ignore the rubber figures in the middle!
But if you find a definitive figure in your mind, despite all the remakes and reissues, keep that one for display and bag the others!
