Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but does the new 25th card art seem a little dull (color wise) on the single packs? It doesn't seem to "pop" off the card like the originals. The colors seem washed and dull. The originals seemed vibrant and deeper.
Anyone else noticed this, or is it just my imagination? |

It is noticeable man, more so on the waves after the 1st one. A big reason, is that much of the artwork has alterations, either minor like on the wave 1 cards, to major on some of the newer waves. You might notice that the artist doing the alterations is not the same as the original artist who created the old illustrations.

I agree. They are efinitely pale in comparison to the originals. I mean the originals were real works of art and had alot of emotion and a real presence to them. Remembering the card art is part of what kept joe fresh in my mind during the years when I wasn't collecting (almost a decade). The new card art is very photo-shoppy and is great as an "homage" to the original but like I said before........pale in comparison.
I can let it slide considering how stoked I am about everything I've heard this weekend!! |

I haven't really compared the cards, but could it be possible that the foiling has something to do with it? Around the edges and Joe logo.

Aside from that, I noticed the feel or the texture of the carded feels pliable and filmy compared to the old school '80s. Basically, the 25th does not feel sturdy.

Didn't really notice this at first.
I can really tell what you mean though, especially on the Flint card. It almost looks like it was done in pastels or something. The rest (of wave 1, don't have any of wave 2) look better than the Flint, but still look a little washed out. |

I really noticed this comparing the Cobra Soldier from wave 2 to my 83 cardback. The darker colors on the 83 card are bolder (Also noticed how different the two artworks look next to each other, and not just the Cobra sigil)

the problem lies in two areas - first, the quality of the cardstock and foil really affects the quality of the print, and second, the artwork is just not that great. They really should have chosen a real artist for this, not just a graphic designer who can draw and use photoshop.
Look at the faces, and the lighting, for example. You can copy the look, and style, and it will look ok. But an artist needs to capture the personality of each character, and this guy obviously can't do it. Hell, the guy can't even paint the details correctly - go look at the bowstring in the single Storm Shadow's hand and see what I mean. |

The 25th bubble feels weak compared to the '80s.
