Ok....
While at work today, I cam across a medical bill with a business card on it. On the card, was what appeared to be the Arashikage Ninja Clan Symbol (with only a slight variation of the lines near the bottom), see the provider (The Well) & symbol's website here: http://www.wellmedicine.org/ Now I always thought the Arashikage Clan "symbol" was something made up for G.I.*Joe, but now am wondering if it's actually based on something in Japanses folklore or history? OR is this Medical faculity just a Joe fan ripping off his favorite Ninja to give his place a more Asian feel? Any thoughts Tankers? |

The Arashikage symbol, along with the one on that card and website, come from the classic Chinese text, the I-Ching:

in the original marvel run scarlett noticed the symbols on Snakes and Stormy's arms and investigated the connection. Can't remember the actual details but it was indeed an actual symbol from the I-ching. Can't rember its meaning though, i'll have to go back to that issue. i'm sure someone else here will remember what it meant

According to the article in wikipedia, it means "not yet fording," "before completion," or "incompletion."
I think it's cool that Larry Hama used such meaningful and rich things in the G.I.Joe universe such as this hexagram from the I-Ching, but at the same time I think it's kind of funny too since I read somewhere that he picked this particular hexagram because it was one of the easiest to remember! |

weird that the i ching is chinese and ninjas...well they are of japanese origin, in the proper ninja ryu context that is. yes there are stories...STORIES...that the lin kwei(phonetic) or forest demons imported ideology and many of the arts and sciences that became ninjutsu proper but then theres the whole japanese yamabushi mountain priest/mystic bit as well. i tend to agree with dr hatsumis history and general telling and i wish hama had used kanji for the clan instead of compounded trigrams from the i-ching. none the less it is bad ass.
i recommned a read of the to te ching and the i ching for any one who wishes to deepen their understanding of the east and the universe ;) |

Your reading that tri-gram wrong. ss has two dashes on top not a solid line. The correct meaning is "Already Fording". Other variations include "after completion" and "already completed" or "already done".

Good points, Viper6! And those books are great recommendations!
I agree that it is a bit strange to have Chinese things for the Japanese ninja, but then again one has to remember that many, many things in Japanese culture have come from the Chinese. Buddhism, and lucky and unlucky days in Japan all come from China. The entire written system in Japan, for example, has its roots in China. Kanji, for example, are in actuality Chinese characters. Hiragana derive from cursive forms of certain Chinese characters, and katakana come from parts of Chinese characters. Also, even if the idea of ninja is purely Japanese, which I tend to agree with, the actual word "ninja" is itself ironically a Sino-Japanese word, or word of Chinese origin, at least in its pronunciation. The other words for ninja, shinobi, or shinobi-mono, are pure Japanese words, though. Sorry, this has become a mini lecture, but I like to talk about these kind of subjects as I am a Japanese and Chinese language teacher, lol! Last edited by Shimaneboy; 08-06-2008 at 12:51 AM.. |

Tolan,
Oops, you're right! Good call, man! I looked at the wrong one and read it wrong. I did feel weird when I typed my above post because I remember reading that it did mean completion in the marvel comics, maybe issue 66. Anyway, thanks! I feel pretty stupid now, but I do have confidence in what I wrote above, lol! |
