Yesterday my 13 year old son was opening his new Skstriker and I noticed that the main body of the plane was the only thing in the box not wraped in a plastic bag. I have been planning on keeping extra Skystrikers put away for the future. But knowing what I have seen happen to toys stored in boxes and the discoloring that can happen, what will happen 5 or 10 years down the road when we open another one up, will the body have that lovely brownish hue to it and no longer match the rest of the plane? Has this been an issue for people that buy vintage stuff in the box and opening it up? And for those who do store vehicles MIB what do you use to store them in. I have only ever used rubbermaid stye tubs.

I was referring to the brown or greenish colored stains that I have found on both figures and vehicles that I have found that have been kept in brown cardboard boxes over the years. I had an incident the other day were my 7 year old wanted to know if he could have the camouflage Cobra diver I had in one of my plastic drawers. It was a Cobra EEL version 1 that was in a box of things a friend had given me. The camouflage he was talking about was the dark green discoloring on the arms legs, back, and head of the figure from lying in the bottom of a cardboard box for over 10 years. There had been other figures in the bottom of the box in worse shape that I saved parts from, but then tossed out the rest. There were a lot of figures in that box that had been in an old mobile command center that never touched the box and were fine and the command center was ok but then parts to an original GI JOE base were turning colors in places from being in the bottom and lying against the side of the box. I believe it is caused by the acid in the cardboard. I know that now when you go to a comic store they sell acid free boxes and bags for your comic books. If you look through some older back issues in old boxes they have out sometimes you see the yellowed plastic bags on the comics from the old boxes.
Now as I had originally asked I wondered if this would be an issue because with the new Skystriker, the body of the plane is held in place in the box with a long piece of fitted cardboard pressed against it’s entire length and the rest of the plane parts are in sealed plastic bags will this pose a problem when it’s stored in the closet or plastic tub for ten or more years and you open it what is the likely hood it will be discolored while the rest of the parts are like new. I wondered if anyone has opened an older toy that was MIB from the 80’s or early 90’s that has had issues from being left unprotected in the old style cardboard box. I keep all my loose collection in plastic drawers or bins, what is the best way to prevent discoloration for MIB items as I am sure Hasbro does not worry about packaging toys in acid free boxes when they are not originally intended to spend 20 years in the box. |
