I've been toying with the idea of mixing storage with my displays....because honestly, I will never have enough space to display everything. That, coupled with the fact that I need a way to organize and quickly reference my collection for my archive site.
There are expensive alternatives out there for us.....but I wonder if there is any interest in what I am about to propose (If so I may be inclined to make them as I could afford the start up of this project right now!) So the idea is to manufacture "heavy paper board" trays with cavites built in for various sized figures (different trays for 4 inch scale, 7 inch scale, and 12 inch scale). The trays would be approximately 24 inches wide and 12 inchs deep and 2 to 3 inches tall. (A 4 inch cavity would be large enough to fit file cards, stands and larger accessories) These trays would fit into a heavy paper board housing approximately 24 inches wide and 12 inchs deep and 8 inches tall. Two of these would fit on a 48x12 inch shelf. This would achieve: 1) Organization of collection 2) Ability to quickly reference 3) Display items on shelves above but store related items under them. 4) ability to use printed designs for more visual displays 5) Cut down about 90% of dust on collectibles annually! Why Heavy Paper Board? 1) So long as you do not get them wet....can last indefinately 2) Less expensive to make 3) Less expensive to buy 4) Printed Design options. So let me know what you think guys...don't be afraid to be honest, but please be constructive if you can : ) SAMPLE DRAWINGS OF WHAT I'M THINKNG THIS PIC SHOWS 4 UNITS ON THE 2 LOWER SHELVES WITH COLLECTIBLES DISPLAYED ON TOP 3 SHELVES (YOU WOULD HAVE TO PROVIDE YOUR OWN SHELVES!)

I think this is a great idea, easy to set up and very functional sounds like.

are they stackable? if so then weight is an issue
if not...then i still need a shelf system for each "pod" I personally wouldn't be interested in the "custom printing" but perhaps labels for the exterior would be nice also...what are the long term effects of the cardboard and the loose figures? (if any at all) last and most obvious...cost, and would it be cheaper to make the components and have the buyer piece it together? or folded to shape...or however it will work? |

(if any at all) last and most obvious...cost, and would it be cheaper to make the components and have the buyer piece it together? or folded to shape...or however it will work? 1) Stackable Yes...but I probably would not go more than 2 or three high before adding another shelf. 2) Custom labels is a great idea....the printing would not be custom ordered...but I may be able to offer a few generic (non trademark infringing) designs that would make it look nicer than just a plain white or black shell. 3) No effects on the toys from any board stock that I am aware of....only if the board stock was wet and the items sat in the wetness long term....but I don't see that happening. 4) I am personally in need of these so I have been looking to purchase....in metal anywhere from $1000 to $2000 each unit! In Wood $250 +....in moulded plastic $150 + (And mould costs of $150,000...not) .....in Heavy Paper Board Stock......Anywhere between $15 and $50 ish depending on how many are made at one time. (The more I make and sell the cheaper each item gets overall) 5) They can be made to fold out, but may be just as easy to offer pre-assembled......undetermined at this point.

I love your concept sketches
Certainly worth making a few prototypes to see how they perform

preassembled...i hope they aren't crushable during transit.
blank labels would be best considering you can't account for every possible thing an individual would want to categorize organizing the columns and rows in "battleship" format (a1 b2 etc) means you could have nearly the entire face of the drawer for listing the "what's what" inside without having to open it. also if you make the "cabinet" out of the stiff board and the trays out of just cardboard is that less expensive? after all the weight of each item isn't much but their combined weight is an issue when you have multiple cabinets. metal...for 1-2000 if that were the case just go buy a big kobalt tool chest from lowes and call it done wood...too heavy but that's just my thought |

Something basically like the 80's and 90's baseball card boxes...thick cardboard, dividers, etc.
That would be of interest especially when sorting out parts |
