Okay let me get this story out in the open. I found a post on another message board about someone wanting a Leg Buckle Variant Cobra Commander 25th Anniversary figure. Apparently this figure has a defined gold buckle instead of the solid gold buckle and belt. More info can be found here on the www.yojoe.com archives. So anyhoo, I stared to hunt this figure for a fellow boardie. Well I had 2. Offered him my damage one and the offer fell through. So I put them up on ebay, and made some decent money. So weeks later I see he is still looking for this variant. So I do some searching. After about a month, I found someone who is selling it. BUT.....he wants $150.00 for it!!! I was totally shocked! I asked him why he wanted so much for it, and this is the story he told me. He said that this version of cobra commander came out in a refresh case. Some cases got them, some didn't. He had heard from other collectors that this figure had the same number run as the Yellow Stalker. But what had happened was, no one noticed the variant, and most got sold at retail stores. He said it was more rare than the Yellow Stalker.
Not really buying the story, I asked a few more collectors, and they told me the same story. I have searched ebay and have asked some collectors to search their collection to see if they have it, and no one does. I am going to rummage through my closet collection to see if I have this figure. So is this the rarest 25th figure? What are your thoughts? |

I always thought that the dark hooded Cobra Commander was the rarest one, and when I say rarest I mean out of all 3 Hooded Cobra Commander variations. The one with the outlined gold leg buckles was the 3rd release, but for some reason Hasbro shipped out more of the solid buckles (the 2nd release with hood color matching suit color) instead.
I have one of them with the buckles outlined in gold as it should be. That is the only one I wanted because it matches the other Cobra Commander. I got mine loose off of ebay some time ago for around $5. A few weeks ago I saw one at Walmart but the bubble was peeling off of the card so I left it. It seemed like it was a return from the original wave 1 release because the card was of the thinner paper stock that Hasbro used at first for the 25th figures. The date stamp was old as well. I still wouldn't consider it the "rarest" 25th Anniversary figure though. |

I think people are grasping at straws for variants cause they missed others when they came out... lIke the so called DOC variant.... That is not a variant at all they number the guns to symbolize the molds but people that don't have variants want to say they do... The whole variant thing is getting out of control...!!

Three variations of Cobra Commander are known to exist: early versions had a darker hood than the rest of the body, while later versions corrected this. Still later versions had a more defined paint application on the buckles of the left leg.
http://www.yojoe.com/action/07/cobracommander25.shtml defined belt buckle is garbage. I saw a guy selling this on ebay for a pretty penny as well. Go for the "Darker Mask" one. Its not a variant, all they did was use a darker plastic. Quality Control varies on these figures, they change paint applications, lighten or darken platics, and so on. Its not intentional, just a production issue. Like the color change in stalker. A true variant would be an intentional manufactured change. Like the black timber. its a "chase" figure. Or like the gold and silver Destro. Though production and Quality changes arent really variants per say they are just "changes", they still hold a lot of value, like yellow stalker. I also bet if they re-release hooded CC in a future wave, they will ALL have defined buckles. |

Well it is a Verified Variant. There are a handful of collectors that have this figure.
I just spoke to another collector that just told me he saw 2 Defined Buckle Variants SELL for $300.00 each at the Chicago Comic Con. That is friggin crazy!!!!! |

So how has anyone found out the production numbers for both this Variant CC and Yellow Stalker? Last I heard, Hasbro wasn't giving that info out. Also curious how both variants can have the same number of items produced but only one of them is more rare. Personally, I will collect a variant or two but when it comes to a figure that has an extra glob of paint or something, who cares?

Like I said, this is not a factory error, this is a legit variant. |

its not a variant. Its just a quality control change. Someone in charge said they want the leg painted with better detail. im sure Hasbro didnt have a devine plan to put a glob on a buckle and then change it to be outlined.
