That whole law of "supply and demand" dictating prices is only partially true. The third part of that is "popularity". In many cases, there is enough "supply" to meet the "demand", but the "popularity" tends to make the price go up because people are impatient, and can't wait for the "supply" train to come in. There's a supply train that comes in every 15 minutes, but there's also the guy waiting on the supply train to buy a couple, so he can make a quick buck on the popularity. Some people don't want to wait the 15 minutes on that next train.
It's that "gottahaveitrightnow" syndrome. There is a big enough supply on the PDDs to go around. Most people that have them will be tired of them in a couple of years when they're not popular, and will probably sell them at a huge loss when the wife finally tells them it's time to clean out the closet. So I ask, are you suffering from the "gottahaveitrightnow" syndrome? By the way, I got the silver one before the prices went too ridiculous. |

you might as well cash in. it's just a question of when to sell to achieve the greatest return.
the only "new" figure that seems to be worth the ridiculous price is the JLU Hal Jordan X-mas special. only 100 made, and signed by bruce timm. |

It is only worth as much as you and the person you sell it too perceive it to be worth. Some might believe it is worth the money you paid for it or others might believe it should be valued at the highest price it ever sold for on EBAY. Some people will always view it as a plastic toy that they can patiently wait to get a good fair deal on and some will view it as a holy grail that they must have now. The bottom line is that you own it so you can dictate whatever value you perceive it to have. I know that I am stating what would seem to be obvious but you would be surprised at what some people believe.
What do you believe it is worth? |

There are a lot of good points here. I personally believe in capitalism and have no problem with someone selling their PDD for $300 if someone is willing to spend the money. HOWEVER, I do have a moral center and I feel a certain code with collectors....that is, you don't screw over your fellow collector.
If you're looking to part with your Destros and want to help out a collector, you find a fair price for the item (say $100). Or, you find a good trade. I'll never forget the generous collector who traded me a George Lucas Pilot figure straight up for Special Edition Jedi Luke. My Luke was worth about $25 at the time and because of the demand, the Lucas was worth nearly $100. But, we both needed what the other person had. So we made an even swap. I'm rambling, but the point is, only you know what your PDD's worth is. |

Value is a product of market forces and individual perception. It takes both to have a transaction.
The laws of supply and demand might dictate that a figure has a certain value, but if I don't perceive the item to be "worth" it's current market value, then the deal doesn't get done. Likewise, I might want something so badly that I'm willing to pay far more than market value for it. That doesn't mean that the item is "worth" that amount. This is where many collectors have issues and why many toys fall victim to "speculation" prices. I'm patient, so I find deals. Like another guy said, if you can avoid the 'gottahaveit' mentality, you're going to find yourself paying market value - if not lower - on many of your collecting goals.

Greed. That's the American way. I personally had an opportunity to get the figure last year at cost from HasbroShop and passed as I never liked the figure. I would definitely not pay $300 for it just cuz a very fickle collector market says its worth $300. Why am I so cynical on the collector market. I have been collecting for over 20 years. Less than 15 years ago, collectors would pay $75 - $100 bucks for a new Power of the Force Princess Leia figure. Now its worth about $1.50 on ebay. My wife paid $50 for a Beanie Baby Derby horse in 1998. Today On ebay it sells for .99 cents. So, when you buy that Gold Destro today at $300 will it keep its value in 10 years. Or will ebay finally see the value back to $10? This is why I now collect for fun and retail only. If I miss it, I don't need it. Just like the loose Yellow Stalker going for a $100 bucks. HUH!! WTF.
Dude you said it. I don't know why collecting for many means investment. |

So I ask, are you suffering from the "gottahaveitrightnow" syndrome? By the way, I got the silver one before the prices went too ridiculous. However, that's a double edged sword. I think it's safe to say - and no one take offense to this, please - that there have been quite a number of GI Joe "bandwagon jumpers" since this line started. Let's face it - it's the current new "hot property" right now and this bubble is driving the price of PDD, yellow Stalkers, etc way up. The core group of collectors, those who happily collected RAH and new sculpt before 25th came around, will likely be happy to find drastically reduced prices once people move on to the next big thing and sell off their Joes on Ebay to help fund their new hobby. Trust me, it's coming - superarticulated classic-style MOTU toys, Thundercats, SW: Clone Wars, etc. GI Joe is a proven property, and the more rare figures will likely always hold a fairly strong value, but $300 for PDD? I doubt it. I think if you want a real "investment", buy the real PDD. |
