Let me start off by saying that Charbroil was among my favorites of the '88 ARAH lineup. With Blowtorch being one of my all time favorite ARAH figures (& actually my first GI Joe) I naturally gravitated to his flamethrower follow up named Charbroil.
When Charbroil 1st leaked from the Walmart computers ages ago as being in the '09 ROC line-up with some other non-movie new-type characters (Night Adder, Red Fang Ninja) I was fairly certain that he would be made from some of the existing elements from the wave 13 Modern Era Blowtorch, so it came as no surprise that he did use some parts (torso, webgear, weapon) but not all. His arms & legs are from the very versatile Resolute Duke, which means he gets a great range of motion only mildly hindered by his large Blowtorch webgear. And speaking of large, this combination of parts makes Charbroil one of the TALLEST modern Joes to date, towering over most Joes & being close in size to Night Adder. Where I thought a new Classic ARAH 80's futuristic bug-like helmet would be made, we actually see Charbroil saddled with a Resolute Flight-Suit Duke's helmet. The helmet is GLUED onto a DVD-pack five '87-Movie Inspired vac-metal Cobra Commander head which gives Char the mirrored visor look. An interesting choice as it makes the helmet cool with it's usage here, but I would have rather seen a unique head, or one that was used underneath that would be more befitting of Charbroil (like Flash or perhaps the unique head used on the Aqua Viper Officer for some strange reason) than a non-removable helmet, as that seems like a step backwards from modern GI Joe or even the original ARAH figure. The color palette is close to the original as he is brick red & yellow, put replaces the silver with mostly a gray color that looks scorched, & some silver highlights are dropped on his clothes for detail & also reminiscent of a burnt look to match the overall aesthetic. The gear is good (but sparse for ROC) as he comes with the very nice previously released Blowtorch flame thrower & bendable tubing that was a vast improvement over other ME tubing (like Flash or Tripwire) & can be plugged into his double port backpack or even his front armor port. The weapon can also be clipped to the side of his backpack as was seen with Blowtorch. The weapon color is a less than stellar choice here as in is the same brick red seen on most of Char's palette, & not in a more weapon like color (like black) that would surely standout better. Charbroil comes with a flamethrower, removable tube, backpack, flame-missile launcher, & ROC stand. Names like "Flamethrower" & "Charbroil" may make you think of Dairy Queen & Burger King more than modern-day military, but Charbroil will be a welcome addition & add some variety to your ranks!! Looks better then I thought he would. Was on the shelf but he looks pretty cool, will have to pick him up if I ever find him.

He's just ok. I won't be adding him to my collection. I wish they stuck with his original crazy color scheme

can you post him next to the vintage one for comparison?
nevermind...a quick look over at yojoe.com shows me enough to consider this one a pass.

^ Sorry 82joe friend, as much as I would love to do that it would take me all day to dig the original ARAH one out of storage & just isn't possible at this time.
But believe me I'd love too if it were possible. |

His color scheme is a little better than Blowtorch. Definately picking him up down the line if I see him.
