Joining the fight for GI Joe retail exclusives, K-mart surprised many with offering a ROC Desert-Themed VS. 4-pack as an exclusive to their chain. The pack comes with 4 repainted ROC figures (Heavy Duty, Duke, MARS Officer, & Neo-Viper), as well as a collectible card in a small, streamlined package. You should also be able to find this pack at K-mart's sister stores Sears & Sears Essentials.
HEAVY DUTY: Love him or not, Heavy Duty is now an integral part of the current Joe mythos. Even though the character has been around since the ARAH days & refocused with Sigma-6, the character gets away from being simply Roadblock's replacement in ROC with being field commander & being a bit more unique w/having an international background. Previously thought to be a rights issue with the name "Roadblock," it has been noted that it was actually a preferred creative choice for HD to be in the movie mythos vs RB. We all know Hasbro wants to get many uses out of their existing tooling, so it comes as no surprise when we see HD reused in this K-Mart exclusive. This time though you maybe happier with what you see. As seeing several of these packs in person, it's to be noted that HD has much better painted eyes, & has a more natural look to the slighty bizarre expression his eye paint had with the single release that turned off some fans. The paint apps are identical to the original woodland camo's single release, this time in a nice desert scheme, except HD is missing the "HD" logo paint on his belt. One of the BEST features on this release of HD is his gear! As the weapons included here are a mixed bag between the 2 single releases. You get the Camo version's rifle, & pistol , & the Impact armor' version's gatling gun & grenade launcher!! The version 1 of Heavy-Duty is sadly, my least favorite release of the ROC line thus far, as I feel the Impact Armor version is a far superior figure in every way. I am thankful this figure has double-jointed knees & cool accessories, but I still feel the arms & hands are of lesser value. But take note, as he is a pack-in release here with similar nicely colored Desert figures, & he will look great with your current & upcoming Desert brigade dios & displays. DUKE: As this exclusive set seems more geared towards children, we are met with the prerequisite Duke figure. Now although desert themed, this figure is not at all similar to the "Desert Ambush Duke." His colors are unique to him & HD, & he features more paint apps then the Zartan figure from which his body is made from. This makes for a good representation but also has the limitations of the Zartan figure with the lack of range in the elbows compared to most ROC figures, & the somewhat meager left hand. Duke also has his belt in better placement than Zartan's & this looks to be more in line with what the figure designer intended. Instead of the MP on the armband Duke features the ROC Joe logo. This Duke also has no goatee, which gives him a slightly more classic feel. The weapons included are the same as the Impact armor Duke. You get the rifle, pistol, submachine gun, knife, & ROC stand. My only compliant about this figure is that the neck is to long for the head, but not overly so. Although many may see this as an unnecessary Duke figure you may be surprised at how nice the figure actually looks in person w/this coloration.

M.A.R.S. OFFICER: I have to be honest, this is my 1st MARS Officer figure. I did not buy the "preview" 3-pack because we saw the exact same figures being released in upcoming TRU Cobra "Disguised" 5-pack. So this is a fresh figure for me, as I do not have another MARS Operative to compare it to, & that can be a good thing. Although listed as a preview figure, the MARS troops are actually not in the film, strange but true. Looking some where between the classic Cobra Troops, Iron Grenadiers, & the future of Cobra, the MARS troops were of much debate upon their debut in fandom. Released as a general release in most countries & as a e-tailer/online exclusive in the United States, many thought the MARS 3-pack would be their 1st exposure to the ROC offerings, but for many it was not. I have to say for not previously owning this figure, in this Desert 4-pack, the MARS Officer is the real winner for me!! His color is great with a deep chocolate brown for the base & nice bronzed highlights on his pads etc. The Officer features the same basic construction as the Neo-Viper with the head featured previously on the Mars Trooper/Officer & ROC Aero-Viper. Weapons included are a rifle, pistol, knife, MARS Officer helmet, & stand.

NEO-VIPER: The final offering in the "VS Desert Pack" is the appropriately named "Neo-Viper." The color scheme on this Viper is a rich chocolate base w/beautifully bronzed armor. Adding to the many colored Neo-Vipers available & coming, you may find this one almost as striking as the Crimson Neo. The scheme matches the MARS Officer & is a nice touch & helps him fit with his other boxed offerings . As with the initial figures released for ROC, this Viper features weapons that plug, this time (as with the other Neo-Viper releases) in his backpack. He comes with all of the same weapons as the single release, 2 plugable rifles, a pistol, backpack, & stand. Sometimes referred to as the "Turtle Viper" by fans, you'll find this Troop to be welcome addition to your Desert or Night-time themed displays & collection.

Glad to see KMart getting into the mix. Nice review as usual! I think they look pretty good. Would rather have seen 4 Joes to combat the Desert 7 Packs but I still like it.

I'm going to start a thread to see how the K-mart exclusive does against Jason Bateman.
