Stars and Stripes Forever Review
I know it is old but I just figured that with all of the new toys that are coming out, I would take the time to review some older stuff that some folks may not have picked up. I know there are alot of people that look at these old sets and wonder if they should waist money on them or just want an honest and fair review of something that they have wanted to pick up for a long time. I decided to do this set because it is sort of rare and my box was damaged to the point of non collectible. This set was released in 1997. The first thing I noticed was that the picture on the back does not match the figures inside at all. I also noticed that one of the figures on the back had a broken thumb in the picture! That should have been a clear indication of why they went to the rubber thumbs on a lot of these remakes. The Snake Eyes figure is not Snake Eyes and Flash is also not included. I can only assume that they figured that most kids would not notice this stuff. It all just looks really crazy in the photo. You will can also see that the figures and the accessories on the back do not match up at all with the contents of the box set. I actually wish they would have stuck with Breaker and Rock N' Roll as pictured on the back. I thought it was kind of funny that all of the filecards have a quote from General Hawk and they used the General Hawk head on two of the figures. They even make mention of General Hawk leading the force that defeated Cobra and didn't even include him in this set. This just seemed a little strange to me. I will start from top left and work my way to the right from each row in this review. Last edited by nerdsgetchicks; 07-28-2009 at 05:31 AM.. |

First off is Sgt. ( Zap Bazooka Soldier )
The color scheme is actually pretty cool on this one. He has a sort of air brushed quality to him. The odd part of this particular package was that his gear was not the same as mentioned on Yo Joe.com and may actually be a variation on the packaging. Mine came with a regular backpack as opposed to the missile pack stated on there web site. This figure is a complete repaint from the original mold. Sgt. Zap as listed on Yo Joe.com Accessories: Zap came with a green bazooka, a green and black backpack, and a green helmet. [See VARIATIONS below.] |

Variations:
Some versions of Zap came with the backpack pictured above. It is the same mold as the other backpack. However, this backpack is black with green painted missiles, as opposed to green with black painted missiles. It's uncertain at this time if one variant is harder to find than the other. I also had a horrible time getting his helmet to stay on. It would actually just pop off by itself and absolutely would not fit on his head. |

Next up is one of my favorite figures of all time.
Stalker ( Ranger ) The paint job on this version of Stalker is just freaking short of amazing. It is actually better than the original version and is a very clean camouflage paint scheme. He is also from Detroit ( My hometown ) and that makes him a complete bad ass in my book. This figure is a complete repaint from the original mold. |

Third on my list is Scarlett ( Counterintelligence )
This one is pretty straight forward and I actually like the paint scheme and darker colored hair for some reason. The only fault that I have is the fact the she does not have peg holes on her feet. I could not attach her to the display properly because of this. I had to just stand her in the crater part. This figure is a complete repaint from the original mold. |

Fourth on the list is Snake Eyes ( Commando )
This version of Snake Eyes is pretty straight forward. He does have a few minor paint details and I really like how they painted the explosives, pouches and the boots. Not a bad figure at all. This figure is a complete repaint from the original mold. He is actually very similar to the Commando Team version that was released at the same time. |

Next up we have Grunt ( Infantry Trooper )
What can I say about Grunt? Well, for starters he looks like a 3 year old painted on him with a paint pen. This is the absolute worst color scheme that I have ever seen. This figure is just plain awful! They also used the original Snake Eyes legs for the bottom half. The top half was a repaint of the original mold. |

Sixth on the list is Rock N Roll ( Machine Gunner )
I don't even want to know what Hasbro/Kenner was smoking when they came up with this one. He doesn't even have a freaking beard! It was made from General Hawk V.2 and Roadblock V.2 then repainted with this horrible paint scheme. I also had a bitch of a time with his helmet as well. They simply do not fit on these figures and should not have even been included with the set. I guess they figured that he was the clean shaven version of Rock N Roll. There was a variation with darker skin that made him look like an African American and is actually quite rare. I found 1 set on Ebay that was going for like $1500 dollars. Not worth that much for my taste. |

Next up is Breaker ( Communications Officer )
Here we go again! This one was made from General Hawk v.2 head and legs, arms of Gung Ho v.1, and torso and waist from Roadblock v.2 They didn't include one single part from the original Breaker. The worst part is the accessories! He has the laser rifle and no where to connect it. I couldn't get the helmet to stay on this figure either. |

Last on the list is Short-Fuse ( Mortar Soldier )
This is my second favorite figure in this set. His the closest to the original version and I actually got all of the accessories to fit perfectly. The helmet was just right. I also love the paint scheme. I wish that they would have made the entire box set as well as this figure. This figure is a complete repaint from the original mold as well. |
