In case you haven't heard, Target has recently started carrying a Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite Iron Man vs. Mega Man X 4'' figure 2-pack, in the vein of their recent 4'' 2-pack releases for Spider-Man Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Dr. Strange, et al.
The Iron Man figure is a re-issue of the Iron Man 2 Mk. III suit, with a new paint job. It retains the ball-hinged hips (and detachable shoulder pads) of the original. The original is on the left; the new version on the right. I think the new version is actually nicer looking (though you'll have to take my word for it, since whatever gypsy curse afflicts my phone camera won't let me get a satisfactory shot); although the red is a bit duller, it's very smooth, rather than the patchy/inconsistent apps common to IM2 figures, and the gold trim is much bolder. The arc reactor has a bit of metallic sheen, though it's still a bit too simple for my liking; I prefer the gradient approach on the IM2 figures. The color scheme is not the best approximation of how he appears in-game, either (where's the gold on the torso?). No accessories are included (either repulsor beam or missile launcher), so be prepared to furnish your own. The build quality is a shade lower than the original IM2 figures, though it's still much better than, say, the Spider-Man from the comic-themed Homecoming tie-in pack, and does not feel at all flimsy. (The hands do detach from the wrists easily, but are also easily reattached.) Mega Man X, luckily, far exceeded my expectations! No corners were cut in terms of the articulation. The shoulders are multi-jointed; the hips are ball-jointed, and can fold into a 90-degree angle; the ankles have bend, swivel, AND rocker joints! Obviously, the range of motion on some joints is a bit limited, the huge moon boots weigh the legs down somewhat, and the shoulder pads (a separate piece) make lateral arm movement a bit stiff--but, overall, they could have hardly done a better job on the articulation, and the build quality is better than I might have expected. The only slightly flimsy aspect are the hips and knees, which are a bit loose--but again, that's partially the huge, heavy boots' fault. Interestingly, the looseness in the knees goes away once the knees are bent out of a neutral standing position. The buster beam attachment is also heavy, but the huge feet help keep him balanced. It fits snugly into the cannon and is easily attached and removed. Honestly, I kind of expected X to suck, but he's awesome. I haven't really cared about anything Mega Man related in 20 years or so, but man, do I love this thing. I never realized I wanted a Joe-scaled version of Mega Man, but I guess I always did! As always, paint app quality can vary. X's eyes are sometimes a bit crooked. Small imperfections are common. Make sure you inspect before you commit! Overall, the brand-new Mega Man X figure is obviously the main appeal of this set--he's damn near spectacular. The Iron Man reissue is certainly nice, but not terribly exciting if you have the original. If you missed out on the Mk. III the first time, then this is definitely one of the nicer Iron Man versions you can get. Either way, X alone is almost worth the price of the set. Hopefully we'll see some more sets in this vein, but as far as I can tell, this is the only one from the "brand" so far. It's the only one Target carries, it's Target-exclusive, and neither TRU nor Walmart carry any such sets. So I won't hold my breath for any others, but I guess we'll wait and see.
