It's about time. One of the more iconic characters from ARAH, Zartan needed his classic figure represented correctly in the Modern Era. Now, don't get me wrong, the 25th Anniversary Zartan was a cool figure, and looked similar to his appearance in the D.D.P. comics, but for me, when I think of this character, I think of the ARAH look. I'm glad that they finally did this version, but sad that he was carded, and I'll explain why in a bit.
This figure is really nice. Same torso as Gung Ho, with new upper arms, lower arms may be the same as Tomax and Xamot, but the gloves appear to be new. Same legs as the previous Zartan, and the head is the same with the exception of a new hood. His backpack is the same, but he comes with new chest armor that closely resembles his vintage look (without the color change sticker, of course). Comes with a pistol similar to the vintage version, the same knife as the previous and two new face masks, Storm Shadow and what appears to be Duke, but looks better than the crappy Duke head (yeah, I know, I harp on that head a lot..but honestly, Duke's head sucks). I have read about some saying that the plastic is cheap and soft, but mine has been fine. It is a different consistency than say Airborne, but I've seen varying degrees of flexibility in the expansive catalog of figures in the modern era, and this is far from the worst. Not an issue to me. Does not have the color change ability, and that would have been cool, but my earlier Zartan supposedly changed color, but it didn't work that good so if leaving that out made for more accessories, then so be it. Except for this. The Swamp Skier sucks. Hands down, it looks friggin stupid. Well, it does have the look of the vintage one, but only like a "Little Tikes" version. Really, it looks better suited for a mini mates figure rather than a 3&3/4" action figure. This should have been done larger and boxed rather than shrunken down to be put on a card. I appreciate the attempt Hasbro, but if this means that we will not be given a nicer one, then that kinda sucks. So, for this review, I'm going to do things a little different. It would be wrong to take Zartan's score down due to the power wheels skier, so his rating will be for the figure only. So.... FIGURE RATING: 9 out of 10 - Great use of existing and new parts, updating a classic, and essentially a damn good figure that replaces the previous version on my shelves. ACCESSORY RATING: 5 out of 10 - Gun and backpack are great, new face masks to add to his disguises, also great. Skier, poor attempt, better luck (hopefully) next time.

Minimates reference! Rock on!! :p
Oh, nice review, btw. I'm supposedly getting mine today, and I can't hardly wait! The original is (and was as a kid) my second favorite Joe figure of them all, and I'm glad that they are finally doing him justice. |

I think I'm in the .001% that actually likes the swamp skier.
Of course I have about 4 vintage ones to offset that. I really think that any kids who get into this line will dig the skier, since they have no reference. It's a nice value added pack-in. Great figure & great review. Thanks! |

How sexist. Get out of the 1950s, man. Us men can wear half-shirts, too! And we can look damn fine while we do it. I personally refuse to wear full shirts.
