This set consists of four figures and some great accessories. Mainly, a news camera that comes on a stand, but breaks down into several pieces including a stand alone hand held unit. Also included is the final M.A.S.S. Device piece.

The figure that most everyone has been looking forward to in this set is Alpine, as this is the first opportunity to grab him a modern form. Great job on him and his accessories, though the choice of paint application on his eyes is somewhat questionable, as he is designed to be looking up. To me, he just looks dead. Other than that minor gripe, he rocks! His vest is removable, as is his belt, but the material and design of the vest make it difficult to remove. But, it fits great, and looks perfect. The grappling hook fits on the end of his rifle to imitate the look of his vintage weapon. Not sure if it was intentional, but it works. Also, his backpack actually is his vintage versions, only modified to fit the modern figure. (Note to Hasbro: Do this with Flint)
Figure Rating: 8 out of 10

Next up is Duke, who I thought looked terrible in early photography but to my surprise turned out to be really nice! The open mouth looks better in person than it has in promo shots. Much improved over that terrible normal Duke Head. Duke features the retooled arms that came on the Tiger Force version, and the crotch seems to have been tweaked as well. Like the Tiger Force Duke, the arms still are a bit flimsy, but still look better than the "Slit-wrist" versions. The added harness for the jump pack is awesome, and the pack itself is painted in a nice metallic blue. I think it stands out from the first version of this, and he subsequent versions that came with Stalker and Skyduster. (please note that the flames do not come with this figure, they are from Hasbro's Star Wars 30th Anniversary Collection R2-D2)
edit: I did forget to mention that it's also time for Hasbro to fix the helmets. The helmet that comes with duke, and many others, does not fit over both ears. And it does this on several characters. You've fixed some of the peas sized heads, now fix the ill-fitting helmets. Figure Rating: 7 out of 10

Here we have a Cobra Para Trooper. Not to be confused with the Para-Viper, this is made of the regular Cobra Trooper body with a new head and helmet and a parachute pack. I'm going to take some heat for this, but I love this figure and think it is hands down way better than the Para-Viper. The new head is miles better than the original trooper bald head, and the helmet is great. I'm glad to see Hasbro moving away from the "pea head" syndrome. His sheath for his knife is corrected like the Bazooka Troopers to hold it tighter. The parachute pack is great, very tight fitting and almost seamless in it's design. The interesting part about it is that in order to remove it, you will have to detach the figures legs. The straps are that tight that they will not fit over the thigh, and that tightness helps in it looking good.

Now, the figure I was most looking forward to in this set, Cobra Commander. He may share the same body of the Helmeted Cobra Commander that has been released to death since last year, but he has hew hands (that also come on the Pyramid of Darkness C.C.) and finally a better proportioned head that actually has a chrome face mask! The helmet is slightly different than the Para Troopers in that it added a raised stripe on the top. This head rules, and makes this by far my favorite Cobra Commander. Great work Hasbro in adding something different to this character that makes us actually want to buy another version. C.C. comes with a timer-bomb (as seen in the opening sequence of the G.I.Joe animated movie) and a Cobra Claw. The Claw seems cheap, and I can not compare it to the version released reently as I did not pick up that set. No matter, as it does not take away from the figure. Cobra Commander's web gear is NOT removable as the straps are glued in place. This is a little annoying, but since it looks good while on the Claw, not terrible.

Wow, thanks for the review. Yeah, looking forward to messing with the Chrome CC and Al "Alpine" Pine. God, was that really his name?
Man, how did you get the 5th DVD pack so quick? ;) |

Great review. I'm really looking forward to most of the figures in this set. I think I'm going to have to repaint Alpine's eyes so he's looking straight ahead.

CC's webgear can come off. It was glued it place, but if you pull it a little it will come loose. It goes together like the old 80s parachute packs and attaches back again too.

I need this set. I'm going to be removing that damn webgear, though. That CC is perfect.
Probably best set so far. |
