First off I want to take a moment to talk about the packaging here. Unlike battle packs from past years where you have the figures displayed with a neutral background (Usually just a large symbol) the figures are now being displayed in mini-dios. This set is showcasing the Joe team breaking into a Cobra base with the Crimson Guards responding. The reason I wanted to show this off is because the packaging is generic enough that it appears to be able to be used for a few different dio scenes, also I just really liked the art work. It was made usung a die cut cardboard tray with a thin cardboard background to give depth to the armory and the Joe team outside.
Now on to the figure reviews.... Last edited by Shogi; 08-31-2011 at 05:16 PM.. |

The Crimson Guard Trooper is the exact same figure we got in wave 5 but with a slightly new paint job. The face is now silver to look more like the card art and cartoon. The silver on the face makes the detail stand out better. The shoulder cord is now silver and the wrists have finally been fixed to have both the molded ridges painted silver instead of the space in between them like Hasbro has been doing since 1985 (This has been bugging me for years) The accessories are exactly the same. The Crimson Guard Trooper comes with a Backpack, Rifle, Revolver and Cobra Stand.
If you don't have the Crimson Guard figure from wave 5 or you just like to army build then this figure is perfect for you. Otherwise, it's not anything new. Still has all the same plusses and minuses from the wave 5 figure. You can see that Hasbro noticed the leg holster doesn't work well and used rubber bands to hold the guns in place. There are only four differences between the Crimson Guard Trooper and the Crimson Guard Squad Leader and they're all paint applications. The most noticeable one is the chest is now silver with a red Cobra sigil. The eagle medal doesn't pop out anymore due to it being silver on a silver background. The stripes on the legs are black instead of silver like the other CGs and the belt buckle is now a silver square instead of the V that is on the other troops. Lastly, the epaulets have a silver bar along with the chevron. The Crimson Guard Squad Leader comes with a Backpack, Rifle, Revolver and Cobra Stand.
I would have been happier with just 5 CG troops instead of four CGs and one that is so different yet still the same. I'm sure he appeals to some collectors, I just don't like the silver chest that much. Figure Rating: 8 out of 10 Last edited by Shogi; 08-31-2011 at 06:14 PM.. |

Not to nitpick, but do you have a comparison pic of the wave 5 next to this one? Would help those decide if they want to go out of their way to find this set. I have to drive 80 miles round trip to TRU. UGH

I just feel this release is too late in the game. This should have been released instead of the Crimson 3-pack and/or when the wave 5 CGs were hard to find. I probably would have bought them back then. Now I've sort of lost interest in them. I don't plan on getting any of the new TRU exclusives (3-packs or 5-packs) unless I come into some extra money.

Those are killer but i hate the random "officers" or whatever they throw in these too. Just put regular figures in, especially with CG's since i only found two of them in the stores and had to settle with having all fred's in my collection.
Just wish they had these in all the stores...I havent been to a TRU since i moved.
