Spirit Iron Knife looks very much like his original counterpart. He uses Shipwreck's torso and arms. The left arm has a bracelet glued to the end of it. He has two new hands, two new legs and a new head. The re-used torso is hidden effectively by the new web gear that sports a plastic loincloth like the original. This web gear isn't as easily removable as most, you'll have to take the legs and head off to remove it. The loincloth doesn't restrict leg movement due to the crotch being a wider, "un-fixed" crotch. If Spirit had a thinner crotch then the loincloth would be a problem. The new legs faithfully reproduce the look of the original ones with a new, removable knife on the left leg. Unlike Shipwreck, Spirit has two usable hands. The left one is posed to look as if he's blessing something, but it'll hold his rifle just as well. The head looks like it was sculpted after the "Sad Native American" in the Earth Conservation PSA's. One of the hair braids runs along the chin line making the chin look a little too wide while the other points backward and looks fine. I think if they made both hair braids go towards the back and thinned the chin a little bit, the head wouldn't look like a sad, ugly square and would look like the fierce, but calm warrior Spirit should be.
The accessories are better than the originals with one little flaw, the problem being the rifle handle. In the 80's we got unrealistic rifles with straight handles so the figures could hold them and look like they were firing them. We now have more realistic rifles with handles that are part of the stock, so that means everyone looks like they're just carrying their rifle instead of shooting it. Spirit's rifle is no exception to this. I love the removable arrow clip that can plug into the rifle or on the back of the backpack for storage. The backpack can come off the frame and the frame has storage space for two arrow clips for the rifle. The knife is nice looking on the leg, but looks far too small anywhere else. Spirit's pet eagle, Freedom is the same one we got in the DTC line. Spirit comes with Freedom, an Arrow Rifle, three Arrow Clips, Knife, Backpack with frame and GI Joe Stand. I'm not a big fan of Spirit's head, but other than that, I'm completely happy with this figure. It's a great update to the original. Has a posed hand that can do more than one thing and can work in any diorama. Figure Rating: 7 out of 10 Pictures by Eopie Herder Last edited by Shogi; 08-31-2011 at 06:14 PM.. |

Awesome figure. I may one day replace the head if I could find a suitable, painted replacement, but otherwise it is terrific.

Great review! I agree completely with the rifle comments. Not a huge fan of some of the 25ths rifle design choices. I like my Joes and Cobras to look like they could be in a realistic firing pose. Eventho they are 4 inch pieces of plastic! lol
