Yesterday's Blowtorch Review featured a 25th Anniversary figure re-packaged and passed-off as a PoC figure. Today sees Hasbro doing another re-release of a 25th Anniversary figure, but this time doing it right. That Figures: REVIEW: GI Joe Jungle Assault Jungle BAT

The BAT has always been my favorite and despite the cool repaint, I wish Hasbro would have redesigned the figure. Much in the same way as the POC Viper and Cobra Trooper. The BAT is due for a true update.

Given that these last two waves have been essentially re-releases and kit-bashes I think Hasbro ''got it right'' in the way they used a 25th Anniversary figure and modernised it. They not only tightened up the original's loose connectors (although that could be more to do with storage/packaging than manufacture, but still...) but also repainted it with a more modern look and added some lifelike details (such as the broken chest panel and damaged head.) I am an advocate of radical redesigns when they're needed (as I said in yesterday's Blowtorch review, I'd have loved some kind of jungle camo dude with a flamethrower and an attitude) but aside from the 1980s ''computerised'' chest panel, there's nothing here that doesn't work for a modern figure and in my view it's a great modernisation of the original (which was already pretty good anyway.) Hope that explains it a bit better.

You definitely have a point. But (IMO), I hardly believe a repaint of this particular figure modernizes it. However, I love the current paint scheme, but it feels cheap. Sure, the original paint scheme would not have work for the POC line, but Hasbro should have a re-sculpted this one. POC represents the future of GI Joe and the BAT looks too old school now. It sucks, because I loved the ME BAT in the 25th line and strongly dislike the POC version for being a cheap short-cut.
And given that Hasbro has pretty much spent the bare minimum on the last 2 waves (which were really just ''fill-ins'' until the 30th/Renegades toys hit) I think they've been pretty savvy in the way they produced a very good toy from a previously released figure.

I'd have to add in to the "Didn't get it right" group. Each of mine has been stripped of all the useless gear (HD chaingun, gunbelt) and even the chest plate was replaced with one from a Family Dollar 25th version I had around. The BAT doesn't do well holding the big gun. The gunbelt limits arm movement. Once the gunbelt is removed, the BAT backpack doesn't fit as well because the peg has been extended for that in-the-way gunbelt. The hands and head are casted in the same light green plastic as the main body, yet the three additional arm attachments are casted in proper black. So there's a little bit of a color difference between arm (dull gunmetal) and the extra attachment (silver).
I like the idea of a Jungle BAT, but I've given them to Joe because the camo makes more sense hanging with a Joe unit as a reprogrammed BAT rather than something Cobra would do. As a figure, Hasbro half-assed this the entire way.

As for the chain gun, as I mentioned in the Review, the claw hand makes it pretty easy to grip the gun's top ''handle'' and from there you can pose him with the right ''normal'' hand on the control stick/trigger. The belt feed is a little bit of a pain but it's the same with the other weapons that use such three-part assemblies.

You’ve made the common error to refer to this Gatling gun as a chain gun. A chain gun has a single barrel while a Gatling gun has several rotating barrels, and is a type of machine gun or auto cannon which uses an external source of power.
The Jungle B.A.T. which you are writing your review for uses the XM214 Microgun by General Electric, specifically the man portable GE Six-Pak. It weighs 27 lbs. but with 1,000 rounds of ammunition weighs 85 lbs. Usually carried by a two-man team, but the Battle Android Trooper can handle it just fine by itself. The weapon has it’s own 24 volt power source and is not powered by the B.A.T. I’m glad they included this weapon with the B.A.T., since most G.I. Joes are not physically strong enough to wield this weapon. Maybe it’s just me, but I somehow prefer just the AKMS assault rifle and the kukri machete that the figure comes with. It seems neat to pretend that Joe is squaring off with a jungle trooper, only to discover that what he is fighting is inhuman and nigh unstoppable. |

Thanks for the weapons info. I'll go correct that!
