You're putting words in my mouth. I have never run into a hoarder in the wild or I am sure that I would be as frustrated. The point, at least to me, is the money, that you so are so quick to dimiss. I have a problem with scalpers because, while any adult collector can dish out extorted prices for a rare figure, but parents who are looking for a figure for a child will not pay the inflated prices. Twenty five years ago Storm Shadow was tough to find as a kid for me becasue of his popularity not because of scalpers. I eventually found one. Today, I would have never have gotten one and I would have missed out on a great toy. How many kids will never get a figure today because of these scalpers? What they do is wrong and their motivation is money.

2012 GIJOE Dollar General Set Of 6 Figures Retaliation Movie Tie In 25th 30th | eBay This is not profit, tripling what he paid for them, taking advantage of unsuspecting collectors…This is gouging I admit it I've sold some 30th sets on Ebay recently, they all have been bidding situations, and my profit has never have been more than $20.00 for what Paid for them.

Sorry man if my Irish was up. And I agree the big culprit is Hasbro. Again popular toys are always difficult to find but when supply is intentionally manipulated (not going to pretend I know why exactly) then I feel it is wrong.

Many of us Joe fans have gotten our children or neices/nephews into them. I'm not the first post that I have seen regarding getting kids into Joes. Just last weekend I put on the Mass Device cartoon for my 3 year old nephew. He loved it and spent the entire time confirming with me who was good and who was bad. I agree that on their own not many kids would even pick one up. But I got my daughter into them and she wants a Storm Shadow. Sure I could just drop the 30 dollars on ebay but for a toy that hasn't (that I know of) been discontinued (though at this point probably) it is insane that I should have to go to a secondary market for one, or any Hasbro action figure.

Picked up a zombie viper at walgreens the other day. Still no luck at dollar generals in Orlando.

I agree with the notion that kids don't care about GIJoe. Even in the 80s, there was media in the form of comics and cartoons to back up the line. With the advancement of technology, the media support has to be more than just that. Kids don't read comics and they are $4 a pop so throw those out. No cartoon on TV. The last movie didn't seem to help any. And there are no video games. Meanwhile I live with a "little Billy" and he likes Star Wars. Why? Media support. Cartoon, online games, kids books, and the movies. I had little influence on his liking of Star Wars. Sure I have a whole bunch of toys but I never pressed him to try it out. The same deal happened with Disney Cars.
It isn't "little Billy" looking for that Renegades Storm Shadow, it's his Dad. And I respect the choice to stick to your believes and not support scalpers but unfortunately it is a loosing battle that will never be won. In the end, you end up spending a ton of time and money trying to get that 1 figure at retail. |

The only thing my son really digs is Thundercats and thats only cause of the new show on cartoon network. Some clowns around the Tank will still tell ya that cartoons have absolutely no influence on toy sales though.

Scalping and hoarding are in response to rare, desirable figures. We may thank Hasbro and ourselves for that. Hasbro makes an awesome figure (like Renegades Storm Shadow) and puts one to a case in only one wave. For months prior, we've been announcing our devotion to this figure, clearly pointing out to scalpers and hoarders which figure to intercept. Then, surprise, they're hard to find.
Same thing with these figures. Only Dollar General gets them? I know Hasbro is testing the market, but only one retailer? C'mon! There must be more retailers interested in a low-priced Hasbro figure with an existing following. But then, Hasbro wouldn't want us to get our fill before the main course (Retaliation figures). As for those arguing that Ren SS being scarce was a direct response to fandom SS saturation; i call shenanigans. That would've been an appropriate response had the figure not included the new ankle articulation. Hasbro didn't think there was a market for the most-posable rendition of one of their most popular characters? Yet, expected us to buy a ton of Tornado-Kick Snake Eyes? While Hasbro is a business and surely profit is their bottom line, sometimes it acts like it wants to perpetuate the secondary market. Perhaps Hasbro marketers think that keeps our passion alive. Not mine. Last edited by heltskelt; 05-17-2012 at 12:40 PM.. |
