I still enjoy them...sure they can get pretty cheesy at times, but some of them have a lot more complex storyline than you would think.

I'll take it over most modern cartoons. The Joe series had 'plots' (albeit outlandish ones for the most part) that unfolded in a deliberate, orderly manner and the dialogue did at least move the plot along. Characters were likeable (even the bad guys) and character models looked like humans. Locations were diverse and interesting too.
Modern cartoons turn me off, big time. People turn up at banal locations, snarl at each other, then fight for extended periods while throwing out very bad one-liners and prattle on about 'team work'. Characters are often 'cool youngsters' (to appeal to the audience age bracket) and are super-deformed to the point of ugliness.
Or maybe I'm just getting old...

I still love 'em. Not ashamed to say it.
I also saw how some Tankers were trying to say the show "didn't age well". They were trying to make the point of how superior the comic was in comparison. They seriously try to convince themselves and others that the comic was so much more "realistic" and the cartoon was just immature fluff. Fact is they were both a bit campy, but the show had an excuse. It's a cartoon. No one ever got shot or died, because we all know that doesn't happen to often in children's programming. There is a lot we know a cartoon can't get away with. The comic on the other hand could get away with quite a bit more, and it still ended up being cheesy as all hell. I dont care how hardcore anyone believes the SAW Viper killing some Joes in that one issue was. Devices like the tongue-in-cheek stupidity of the Dreadnoks grape soda and chocolate donut addiction will always contradict the comic's "hardcore realism".
Being that we all know the cartoon and GIJoe in general as a whole is a children's product, some adult collectors that still enjoy it have to make it out to be something it's not so that it can still "fit" them. Being that comics are now mostly an adult media, they cling to that as sort of an anchor away from feeling ashamed they still like toys. Not to burst anyones dillusional bubble, but I don't think there has ever been a GIJoe comic ever made that should be considered adult reading.

Sunbow rules. While some episodes are excruciating to watch, there are many that I am still amazed at. Examples include: "The Traitor" parts one and two, Memories of Mara," "Worlds Without End" parts one and two, "There's No Place Like Springfield" parts one and two. Also LOVE "Cobra Claws Are Coming To Town." There's many more, but those are my favorites.
Waxing clowns and smoking fools since 1979.

I didn't start reading comics until I was 10 or 11 and Joe had been out for a while by then.
I eventualy starting reading it towards the end and went back and starting reading the earlier issues a few years ago.
I like them but don't see the huge difference between the two.
I will admit the cartoon is more fantastic in nature.
I think you hit the nail on the head though.
