Question about Red Ninjas

Do the Red Ninjas have any historical significance from the 80's G.I.Joe? They are not in the Sunbow cartoons, and though I have only read a few comics, they weren't in there. Anyone have any info. on this? Or were they simply created for the 25th line?

They were in the old marvel comic. They are from the same clan as storm shadow and snake eyes.

First appearance, GIJoe (Marvel) #21. They made numerous appearances during the marvel comic run, and they have come back on occasion during the Devil's Due comics.

They most definitely were not created just for this line. Other Red Ninja figures have existed in recent years.

Yeah, in the Marvel run, they were disgruntled members from Storm Shadow'a Clan, who were ticked off Storm Shadow brought Snake Eyes to the clan and blames Stormy for the fall of the Arashikage Clan. Then Devils Due brought them back and after a huge battle, only 6 Red Ninja's remain, to re-establish the Arashikage Clan.

my favorite bit about the red Ninja figure is that they didn't just repaint storm shadow, but gave them a new comic-accurate head

I only read the Image/Devil's Due Comics version of red ninja's
they play a role in the Joe Universe. Also Didn't Snake Eyes defeat the Leader to become there leader?
