Hypothetically, how much and would you buy it...

Okay, so today I was talking to Agent-GHQ online. Started off with our typical conversation of what was new and what Joe stuff we got recently. Then it turned towards a discussion about the Terror Drome. I don't recall how it started at this point, but I do recall telling him to just buy a vintage one off eBay or from a fellow collector. He could do that and get one of those new Firebats and A.V.A.C.'s too.

He then mentioned that the mold still existed. I told him yeah I read that too, but that doesn't mean Hasbro is going to be making it. I wouldn't hold my breath on that one (hey, I would like one just as bad as the rest of you). He said that Hasbro could/should make it and that a lot of people/collectors would buy because most Joe collectors are adults these days. I told him a lot of people might WANT one, but not necessarily buy one. Which led to us discussing the retail price.

Agent-GHQ seemed to think $70 would be sufficient and a plausible retail price. I told him not even close. Look at the R.O.C.C., that was $40 and the Terror Drome is at least 3 to 4 times bigger (also originally priced at $45). I said it could easily be $150 to $200. And now that I think about it, isn't that new Millennium Falcon supposed to be $150? The TD is bigger than that (if I recall correctly, been a while since I've seen one in person).

He still thought that $100 was what reasonable and that people would be multiples. I said no way on both statements. Not all of us have the disposable income that he does. ;) (You see his crazy Viper army? )

So this lead to a discussion again tonight about it and he threw in the Flagg and Defiant. He said the cost would be $200 and $135 respectively. I then told him that the Flagg was $110 originally and the Defiant was $130.

So...with that said... what do you think the price would be today if these "playsets" were to be released into retail again AND would you really buy more than one? Keep in mind the rise in costs of manufacturing and all the other contributing factors that have caused the prices to increase since the original line was released. Be honest about your answer(s).

Lets see...

Terror Drome: $130-$150
U.S.S. Flagg: $250-$275
Defiant: $300

Most likely I would only be getting a Terror Drome at those prices.

1. I highly doubt any playset THAT huge is ever coming back. It ain't 1987 anymore.
2. I wouldn't buy any of them unless I somehow got stupid rich between now and then.
3. They would cost so much to make (remember, plastic is made of petroleum) store, and transport, and take up so much shelf space, that the price point would be far more than the $100 so many dreamers seem to think a TerrorDrome would cost or the $150 people think the Flagg would. I think the Flagg would be at least in the $400 range.
5. Sure, collectors would like them, but to sell enough of something at THAT price range to be successful, kids would probably have to be buying the line.
6. What kid is buying a $500 action-figure playset instead of the latest videogame platform at the same or lower cost?

I agree with that last statement 100%. Only us geeks would be buying these items. I' love to have a USS Flagg though. That'd be sweet.

I would probably buy one but would prefer a remake of the dome. I would pay no more than $79.99 for the original.

Irid70, I do realize the actuality of these ever being released again are slim to none (as the saying goes, and slim just left). This was meant to be a "hypothetically speaking" kind of thread. Alot if not all of your points were what I brought earlier today in conversation with Agent-GHQ.

I didn't have any of these large playsets. I had the HeadQuarters and the Tactical Platform, but if their was a chance to get the Flagg and the Terror Drome then I might be tempted to get them both. Maybe Hasbro could make them available on their website only and make them by order instead of sending them to retail to just sit on the aisles.

I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything, WW. I realize we basically agree on things.
