Stephen Sommers isn't entirely to blame folks and although he should bear a great deal of the burden for what didn't work let's be fair in stating that there were plenty of things that *did* work. Overall the movie was a fail as far as capturing the Joe I wanted to see on screen, but I don't blame Sommers entirely for that. I blame the entire debacle on a perfect storm of factors that no one person should have to bear the brunt of. It just is, and lord knows this isn't the last bad movie based on a beloved childhood property that will make you want to pull your eyes out and stomp on them- *cough* Yogi Bear *cough*... While it was a great thing that the powers that be had enough faith in the brand to even push forward with a live action movie, it's going to take a while to get GI Joe out there again successfully. |

The Duke actor was terrible. REALLY, REALLY terrible. He mumbled. He seemed weak. He'd be fine as a private (without many lines) , but not as a leader. Lame selection.
The Duke + Baroness connection was a distraction. Neither of those things has much to do with the director. |

I am honestly surprised by how much fans did not like ROC. I thought it was a good movie--not what I would have imagined as a movie adaptation, but still pretty good, regardless. Now that's not to say that I am in love with every G.I. Joe cartoon, comic book, etc. However I just think all the haters out there will never be satisfied.

What didn't work was increasing GI Joe's popularity to the masses and ultimately, sell more toys. Unfortunately neither happened as ROC was heavily criticized and the associated toyline being found in abundance at discount retailers more than a year after release. Unfortunately POC did not escape under it's movie predecessor's shadow as the newest wave of bravo vehicles made it to ROSS at 1/2 off of MSRP in lieu of hitting bigger retailers at full price first. In addition, look at POC; delayed 6 months from intended release, and if you take a step back, a lot of the figures are kitbashed in lieu of new molds. Hasbro wanted ROC to do for GI Joe what Bay's TF movies did for the Transformers brand. No matter what happened, that was the end goal and that was not achieved.

i smell scapegoat...
the problem wasn't the director, it was that super terrible and super rushed script... "here, we need to avoid the writers strike...i need for you to write a script for a movie about a beloved iconic toyline with a deep 40 year history of toys and cartoons. i know you have no experience what so ever with any of it...but we are spending 150 million on on this...we start filming it a month! yooooooo actionman!!!!!" while you're at it fire who ever ok'd it...172 million dollars sub-syfy quality effects and card board acting...hasbro and paramount got jipped.... Acting, editting, effects, and even script changes are in the hands of the director. You can't blame someone for putting the money into what was viewed as a major action project with a recognizable product. |

Wow, first post.
"The Mummy" was a fantastic, unapologetic popcorn film that wound up being very good. Everything since in Sommers' output has been disgraceful. I'd love to see a good G.I. Joe movie, and maybe now we have a chance. |

I hope they keep the original cast for sequel. As another poster said, for continuity sake. ROC worked for me on alot of levels. I also think Channing did good and am thankful Duke wasn't portrayed as some kind of stuffed shirt trying to channel Charlton Heston.
Ideally, I see Rod Taylor in the role, but that's not going to happen. |
