What good is a figure if it's not in a cartoon or a movie? Look at what they're doing now with ROC, the same thing they did with the 25th line.. They're releasing more unknown characters.
It's bullsh!t, where's our #@ck!ng Sci-Fi, Airtight, Lifeline, Dial Tone, etc, etc on classic style cards?? Besides, many of the characters you mentioned can be view as "cheap knock offs" of earlier characters. After all, we got Flash, Doc and Breaker, so why would we need SciFi, Lifeline and Dial Tone? Just something to think about...

As far as I'm concerned, Hasbro has royally f-ed up their distribution for RoC and the company & freelance local reps (who are partly responsible for digging stock out of back to put on empty shelves and to rotate stagnant stock) do not give a damn. Not once have they cared that product isn't getting to stores and not restocking at many stores that are nearly empty. I've managed to get every figure I want except for Kamakura, but many people don't work as hard as I do to find things. Those people see the same Wave 1 Alpha Vehicles (usually a solid wall of 8 Mole Pods as I saw the other day) and Wave 1 Bravo Vehicles (Firefly w/Gunship being the bulk if not all of them) at most stores. Same damn Baroness, Destro, Viper, HD, and a few other key characters no one seems to want at any price in a multitude of four or five each at times. I want new product to show up for both of us finally. I want them to stop expecting all of this to go solid clearance as that's how the retailers have been treating the line since the movie left theaters. And for this to happen, Hasbro needs to get their act together and do some work. We know what's coming, but the retailers sure as hell don't and want it gone.

Hate to burst your little bubble, but toy companies have been having their toys made in China for over 40 years. Hasbro hasn't outsourced anything: they still design all their products here in the US and have them made in China, JUST LIKE EVERY MAJOR CORPORATE ENTITY ON THE PLANET! You might feel prices are high, but that is subjective. For YEARS GI Joe has been drastically undervalued at retail. For the first time, it is viewed in the same light as Transformers and Star Wars. Take a look around the toy aisle (and I mean a REAL LOOK) and you'll see prices are higher, but the ratios (ie, how much a figure compares to a board game for example) is largely the same. |

Instead of slave labor and hand painting joes like they used to do. Isn't it now machines that do all, or most of the painting? And wouldn't machines be cheaper than humans, no eating or sleeping. You would think the joes would be cheaper with machines painting everything. If anyone has any insight on this I'd love to hear it. Last edited by sweeper; 01-05-2010 at 01:24 AM.. |

What I meant was, they could be moving jobs over into this country right now, if they wanted to. Instead of continuing to employ the chinese. You see, China is a richer country than they were back in the 80's.

Toys aren't produced in the US (or North America in general) because consumers simply will not pay the cost. Regardless of the economic changes that have happened, cheap overseas labor is what keeps prices as low as they are. You have complained that stuff is too expensive, yet if Joes were produced in the US, you can easily expect the retail cost of a given figure to double, at least. Tomy/Takara (the Japanese company that helps produce Transformers) has already stated that they are moving manufacturing to Vietnam due to increases in Chinese labor costs. Yes, things are largely machine automated, but you still need people at various points in the production process. Look at cars, despite robots doing a LOT of the work these days, many of the factories still employ thousands of people. Toys are no different.

Well if quality went up with the price.. then I could justify paying $7.99 per figure. In the 80's Joes that were brand new came with tight joints and good paint jobs. Now they come with sloppy paint and loose joints. About half the time the metal leg connector is loose and wobbles. That's unacceptable for a figure costing over $5.

US consumers are cheap asses. In 2005, Hasbro produced the TRU exclusive Moray Hydrofoil, with much of the labor done IN THE US. Retail cost on that set was $10-15 HIGHER than if it had been produced solely in China.

I felt completely brutalized by Hasbro over the whole affair, but realize that, like a lot of companies in this economy, they try to do too much with too few people who aren't paid as much as they should be, so distribution, availability, and communication aren't great. The answers they gave for the Best of the 80's pack weren't wrong, there were piles and piles of that pack. I just wish that in their answer they could've been more explicit like: go to Marshall's on November 12th and you will find a mound of the Best of the 80's DVD pack. |
