Actually, while we all seem to think of the movie as a vehicle to sell toys, I think we need to keep in mind the $300+ million dollars that the movie made in gross sales worldwide is a pretty huge chunk of change that'd take a pretty huge number of figures and vehicles being sold to match. The movie is a product in and of itself, which makes its' own money. We talk about it being a "two hour toy commercial" but that's not necessarily its only (or even primary) purpose. The franchise as a whole is larger than even the toy line itself, even if they're inextricably linked in us collectors' minds. The movie was designed to raise awareness (whether that leads to more toy sales or not), be a successful product in and of itself, -and- to sell toys.
Speaking of designs like the MARS Troopers and such, has any conceptual art surfaced of that sort?

Look at X-Men. It's Marvel owned and Marvel's own movie people produced it. But they okayed the custome changes.
Why? Because the movie-people said "colorful costumes like that will be expensive to make and won't appeal to the mass market".

In either case, I don't think any of this has any bearing on whether or not we get a Resolute HISS someday. I think it's possible, but to do it in the manner that most fans want (big, troop storage in the back, etc...) it'd have to be at least at the Night Raven pricepoint, if not an entirely new pricepoint of its' own. That design at the size of the old HISS, for example, and people will be whining that it's too small. It looks like it'd need to be at least 1.5 times as wide as the old HISS (due to the offset cockpit), and about that much longer too (to avoid looking too squat/compressed).
The Hiss II has a cockpit built for 2, and both it and the DTC Hiss can carry a gunner and 4 troops in the back. We're not going for friggin' BBI level detail here. There's no reason a Res Hiss would have to cost more than the Steel Crusher (which is around 1.5 times bigger than a regular Hiss). |

Toys are a nice bonus that brings in royalties for Marvel, whereas that is Hasbro's primary concern, so I would think they have more of a vested interest in what looks good on screen AND they're able to sell to kids (and maybe collectors too).

Oh we're definitely going for BBI level detail here. Anything less and people will find cause to complain. Beyond that, the Res-HISS is a different design than the HISS II or a DTC HISS. They'll already have to do some finagling to fit any decent amount of figures in the back while keeping room for the turret/gunner compartment.
Plus: Modern figures are bigger than RAH and DTC era Joes. You can fit four ME Joes into a DTC Hiss, but it's a tight squeeze and doesn't leave much room for gear. I don't have a HISS II to compare, but I'd imagine it's much the same. EDIT: The Steel Crusher is that big? Both width and length-wise? |

I'm at work so I don't have them on hand, but I do remember when I got it I stuck it next to a Hiss and was fairly gobsmacked at how much it dwarfed the tank. With the rear gun popped it's about as tall and almost 50% wider, so yeah, it's definately the big boy of the Bravo line for now. |

I know that, but I think X-Men - or any Marvel movies - are comparable only to a certain degree. Marvel's basically a media company and their business is to sell stories. It wasn't so much about "appealing to the mass market" in the sense of selling toys - it was just that they believed - probably correctly - that the bright colours would look silly to most casual movie viewers.

I'll make you all a deal...
cuz I think Resolute HISS is coming sooner than later... if we DON'T get a Resolute HISS by this time next year I will force myself to watch both ROC and Resolute for a second time. (the first time for both was torture enough).

I don't think we'll be getting a Resolute HISS so I'll take you up on that deal.
