That is a nicely inked comic.

Love the Helix design and the artwork in the comics, but does every badass really have to be a ninja / martial arts master / part of the Arashikage clan? It's an interesting concept, but I'd love to see something new from the comic side that hasn't already been done.
Though I have to say I love that they're bringing back the MASS device. As for "hasn't already been done," you'll find very few concepts in Hollywood or comics that don't already exist somewhere. How else are they supposed to display "badassery" in a military fantasy comic-book without making the character an excellent combatant? Still, she's already coming across as pretty much a ripoff of the Cassandra Cain incarnation of Batgirl crossed with a little bit of Taskmaster. Maybe characterization within the book will fix that but certainly the "natural combatant wunderkind" has been done before. Last edited by Jmacq1; 08-12-2009 at 06:57 AM.. |

Funny how if you read the Transformers IDW comic so many fans completely dispise the new IDW character Drift because he's a ninja-type double agent who's supposed to be totally badass but this new IDW Joe character Helix is totally badass with no history and everyone embraces her, so far at least.
This is the only quote somewhat questioning her new-comer-ness not saying I don't like her or Drift but it seems kind of odd to me that one fan base can embrace the badass new-comer but the TF fan base crucifies the badass new-comer |

I always get mine from my local comic shop, They post their new releases on line so I know exactly what day the arrive, and If I call and ask they'll hold them for me so I can pick them up, they'll even hold the cover style I ask for, and there is no up charge from the cover price, and they take good care of all their merchandice so I know they'll be pristine. But if your having a problem with your local comic shop, such as "You've been ban for life" (ALA COMIC BOOK GUY FROM THE SIMPSONS) you could try calling around. I imagine if you call B&N or what ever book stores you have locally, the manager would be able to tell you. Heck, you might beable to get them to begin carrying the title. Though with the hype of the movie I wouldn't be surprised to see that they carry the titles anyway.

Well, Helix isn't part of the Arashikage, nor technically a ninja (that we know of), but yes, generally "badassitude" in many comics is largely based on martial arts mastery. Anybody can shoot a gun or plant a bomb. Bringing a knife, or nothing at all, to a gunfight and winning is "badass."

As far as easier, it's all subjective, the artwork has very high clarity, nice design elements, and most importantly, reads well; not once did I ever have to ask myself what I was looking at. The bigger issue here is the overuse of certain effects, and more drawn backgrounds would be better. More on that tomorrow. Other than that, I'd love to see Joe Suitor return to work on more G.I. Joe issues for IDW.
Even still, there are exceptions. One of the reasons I laugh at the term "anime style". There are as many styles as their are artists. |
